How do I ask the guy I’m seeing if we’re exclusive and if he will be my boyfriend?

I don’t want to be pushy but I’m not sure what we are. We started out as friends with benefits then friends now we’re friends with benefits again and we’ve been there for each other threw a lot of hardship. He means a lot to me. Every time I see him he asks if I’m seeing anyone else and I tell him I’m not and a month ago I asked him if he was and he says he’s not but I’m not confident in his response and I don’t know what this thing we have is. It’s almost been going on for a year and I’ve caught feelings and I don’t know if he has or not. I met his best friend a few weeks ago and he told me at that time that wants me to meet his family but he hasn’t brought it up again. I want him to be my boyfriend I’m tired of the confusion. I’m bad at this help me!!

if you have feelings for him then just say "i have feelings for you and i hope you are the same. if you are then maybe we can do something more serious or steady?"
if you don't then "you know, i haven't been seeing anyone, and neither have you, so since we work well together, what do you say about us seeing if there is anything more to it?"
if he panics, then just tell him it's fine either way, no pressure. I don't know if how you two hang out but you can do it before the sex so you two could forget about it by having fun, you can do it while you are drinking or someking or whatever else you think will fit.
if it turns out he already thought that you two were exclusive then that's great! just be (and act) happy, and say that you weren't sure and you are glad that you are.
you are not in your early 20s, now is the time to be direct, if he is about your age, he should be able to figure out what he wants and be able to be direct about it with you when you ask him.

happy to help, and i will be cheering for it to go as well as you hope. and of course you should have a drink! asking such a question can be a bit heavy, take off some of the load and with just the right amount, no matter his answer, you'll probably both make a great memory out of it!
