My crush's mother is dying. Should I offer him my support by text?

I myself lost my father a few months before we met. When he told me his mother was ill, I was afraid to re-experience this situation once again + to be hurt by seeing someone I love having to deal with this pain. Today I just learned that his mother was terminally ill and I think this is a matter of days. It breaks my heart to know that his younger brother and him will go through the painful steps of grief as I know how it feels.

We haven't talked for a year and a half but he asked my friend many times about me during all this time, saying I was still on his mind. I'm currently on vacation where he lives and I wanted to see him to reconnect. We might see each other this week. It is definitely not the right time to reconnect and have a flirt, I know he is about to live painful weeks/months.

I want to be a friend right now and to tell him I'm here if he wants to talk as I experienced the loss of a parent. Is it okay to be moved by the situation and to offer him my support?

Details : We texted for months and he decided to not pursue a relationship as we lived long distance and there was lockdown. He has a new girlfriend but it's not serious according to my friend.
