Do you believe you can change the future?

I was listening to a show talking about time travel... how it seems possible to travel to the future, but not so easy to travel to the past.

Do you think you can change the future, even in a small way?

Sure seems to me you can. It may be the one thing we control... the now and future.

Each engagement and choice you make, the words you use and how you respond, is creating the future at minimum. Maybe changing the course of someone's life... including your own.

Theoretically speaking, if we could go to the future and change an event, and then return to the present, it would have been all for nothing, because the present determines the outcome of the future.

The reason I saw theoretically is because by traveling into the future, you would be interfering with the timeline. Some psychists believe time is on a loop, and say if you did manage to change the future, you may end up changing the present and the past as well. I do understand what you mean by, Changing the future.

I'm not sure if you ever heard of the "Einstein Rosenberg bridge theory". It's quite fascinating. When you get a chance, do some research on it. It was a theory on worm holes. This may give you some answers too. I'm a bit of a science nerd, but what can I say. Knowledge opens doors!

to some degree everyone can change the future. not everything can be changed though

if China is gonna invade Taiwan tomorrow even in 3 months time, you're not gonna prevent it from happening

if a tsunami was to happen tomorrow or even in 6 months time, you're not gonna prevent it from happening

if another aliens from a distant galaxy wanted to wipe us out tomorrow or even in 10 years time, you're not gonna prevent it from happening

I don't believe you can time travel although I hope to be proved wrong because that would be amazing.
Having said that, I don't believe you can change THE future, I believe you can IMPACT a change in the future by changing YOUR future. You can change YOUR future even without time travel, which in turn impacts the future over all but you cannot change THE future. All the choices we make direct us to somewhere, we choose which choices and actions we make that will determine our future, and that is what we have power over. Learn to make good decisions and take action thus you will have a good future and vice versa

Although is appears we have free will, it may be everything we do is simply molecules, etc., following the laws of motion. In that case, other than randomness, the future is already defined. However, if, as it seems, we do have free will then we can affect our future and, in a tiny way, the future of others.

Exactly. It's merely a question of free will. If we are able to make any kind of choice, no matter how small, we are causal agents and thus we change the future.

But maybe we do live in a determined universe. If so, is free will an illusion?

It follows that consciousness itself is an illusion created by the evolution of biology. That consciousness is merely another survival tool the organism has at its disposal.

But if that is the case, why do we perceive or experience anything at all? How is it that what is essentially a very complex machine come to experience anything at all?

How could even an illusion manifest?

That is the called the hard problem of consciousness.

I think that the hard problem is the more fundamental question than free will.

What was the first organism to be conscious?

One might say human beings. We are conscious of our own selves in ways animals are not.

That's not my question. My question is, what was the first organism to perceive or experience anything at all?

Did the first spark of life experience it's own creation? Do micro organisms have some kind of experience or perception at all?

Or does perception evolve later in vertebrates for example?

Clearly animals feel pain. They experience like we do. But how far back does it go?

Either way. I think the fact that living things experience anything at all is insane.

What is it about an organism that allows it to experience or perceive, that an A. I. cannot? Why is it we can make this ever increasingly complex A. I. yet will it ever truly be able to experience like we do? Or will it forever be a glorified calculator even if it conquers mankind?

@SoIcyGang Great challenging questions. First species and very first to be aware, never pondered that. May be hard to understand until we die, go back to where we started and then time is uniform and we can see it all. That's where I think this is more relevant, at least exiting.

Well I always try to help the planet by recycling plastic bottles because I want the planet to be as healthy as possible

And I stopped using them asmuch as possible. ditto for "disposable coffee cups". If you start to think like your great grandparents, you'll be doing much better than how we were trained... in our disposal society.
The plastic cup will be used one time and I pick up a lot of trash... will sit somewhere for a long time before breaks down, ending up in the water supply.

When people in movies and books travel back in time they usually fear one slight change in that time may have severe effects in the present (or future), however people in the past always think they can't do nothing to shape the future.

Cause and effect. Everything you do obviously effects your future, but can have an impact on others, too.

Whatever I do will change very little of the future. The consequences of our actions are so complicated and diverse that predicting the future is a very difficult business indeed. I cannot change everything, but can change a little bit.

In a sense. Every action everyone takes shapes the future. It’s usually in the most unnoticeable of ways, but small actions can stack like dominos.
