Is having a child together a true necessity in a relationship? What would you do if your S. O. didn't want kids?

My girlfriend doesn't want children and for the longest I always thought a happy couple grew to having a child together as a true stepping stone of a good loving relationship together. However ever since I been with her she's treated me amazingly and I accept not having a child in the future with her, because of how much she's loved me.
But I also feel like later on in life I may regret us not having children when we were more active, but I feel two people need to agree commitment and a want to have a child together before having a child, plus since she feels it will interfere with her job I decided it is best we don't have children at least for now. I wouldn't want my child to be brought in a house where they would feel like a burden to someone, and I wouldn't want my girlfriend to have to deal with more problems than she is prepared for.
