Do you believe in "work hard and play hard"?

Question

My wife and I believe in this wholeheartedly. We give our 110% in everything we do, from our professional careers to raising our children, and we make sure to enjoy the everything to the fullest.

We spoil each other and always try something new or exciting once in a while.

That was my whole philosophy in my 20s to the extremes. Ultimate workaholic and "partyholic" at the same time. Work like a maniac, party like a maniac, repeat. If I got behind on my work, blow off my friends for a few weeks, catch up, then rejoin and party so hard that I'd wake up in the wrong city with little recollection of how I got there.

Nowadays, I neither work so hard nor party so hard. I don't have the energy for it. In my 20s, I was like the Energizer bunny and had non-stop energy. Could somehow manage to still be the first one to arrive at the office and last one to leave on Mondays and still get really good work done even when I was totally hungover because I made the foolish mistake of partying on Sunday night. When natural energy failed me, I'd zap myself into alertness with caffeine and energy drinks and nicotine (I used to smoke back then to help me pull all nighters).

Also, at least taken to the extremities that I took it with the non-stop activity and stress and often running on little sleep, I think I was always on the verge of some sort of angry outburst or nervous breakdown the whole time. I also invited a lot of questionable people into my life since I was running largely on run on fight or flight mode and you don't exactly care so much about who you befriend or date if a part of you thinks and behaves like the world is going to end tomorrow.

So I no longer live by such a philosophy these days. I instead try to "work moderately and play moderately": everything in moderation (although I still fail). I do owe a lot of where I got in my career and with the better friends I made though to the period in my 20s when I lived by that philosophy. So I can't exactly regret it. Yet I feel too old and tired to live by such a philosophy these days.

I am still working hard, as is my fiancée, but we are at an age where we would rather relax and do something at a leisurely pace rather than being frenetic. Enjoy your youth while you are young!

I always put 150% in my work, mostly because I simply love it. Raising Drama Queen is an art, so I have to be very attentive, flexible and reactive because she is just like me, walking change and raw emotions :) and resting time is something different. It's more a time I don't have to give myself so much as I finally can take something for myself. Silence, nature, physical exhaustion, and time with my family and friends.

so I don't think I believe in this. I believe in conscious adjusting to whatever is around me, whatever others and me need at the moment

Your relationship sounds wonderful. I think this is a great motto. My husband and I really enjoy our time together when we relax. Does that count as "play hard" 😅

One of the most common regrets people have when dying are that they wish they didn't work so hard. Life isn't all about work. Just because you work hard doesn't make you a better person. It means you're likely to be more financially successful, sure. But happy? No.

That's something I wanted to do.

And then I saw how jobs and work were not designed nor meant to make people rich.

Which means I won't be able to do that.

So I have recalibrated the "work hard play hard" philosophy into "find your gold mine and then play hard".

If swing trading with brokers is not a sham and it's real money that I can withdraw at will, then that's my gold mine, my "redemption", my ticket out of poverty and my livelihoods lifeline. I have yet do to just that and then ditch jobs altogether.

I’ve always worked hard but actually enjoy the simpler things in life. I get the fact that people love the high energy lifestyle and well if that works for you then power to you. Not for me though !

Naw, I believe in work to make others work harder, I wanna be a boss not a worker, the system is all wrong, if ima work hard, ima make sure it's worth the returns, people put limit on themselves when they accept a hourly salary, with efforts you can make a lot more than what the system offers, personally I can't make an hourly salary knowing someone else is living on the mountain of cash.

No. Life is short. If you are handed opportunities. Even if it causes you to slack off, relax a bit and have fun... take them. I'd rather not regret the good life stories.

no, I like to relax... so, I rather work smart... which is also hard work, yes... but not an exhausting one play? some philosophy... rather go smart with sports, much more fun for me that way

No I don't. I do give my best possible input once I find it to be worth it. But I leave away "hardness" (which still requires a commonly accepted definition :) )
