He casually says "I love you"?

These days sometimes when I'm with my boyfriend we'll be casually talking or joking and he'll say "i love you" but not say it directly TO me..I'm not sure how to take this.

Example, we were joking about something and he said "I'd call you and say "i love you!". It was in a pretty casual situation, and I just continued on with conversation.

I'm not thinking its anything serious because if he was saying it for real, he'd be clear about saying it, right? I don't want to make a huge deal out of it but at the same time I don't want to keep "ignoring" it if he really does mean it, because I do love him too...I'm just scared to say it.

if he 'casually' mentions it...do the same! If he says 'I'd call you and say I love you" say, "then why don't you?" and then just laugh and smile like if you were joking as well. Trust me,either you'll get him thinking...or you will get a response.

sounds like he's probably gauging your reactions to see if when he decides to blatantly say it for real, you'll be receptive to it and not bug out like omg you love me!?!
