Stereotypes Still Rule the Earth!

I'm a blonde girl and let me tell you, stereotypes rule the world. If I have my hair down and wearing feminine clothing I'm treated completely differently than if I have my hair up and jeans and sneakers on.

Not just talking about being approached or hit on. I mean people assume I'm dumb, don't take my opinions seriously, and just act more dismissively in general toward me.

On the plus side, they hold doors for me more often, offer compliments (some creepy), and make small talk more when my appearance looks more "girly".

I see these differences just by hairstyle, amount of makeup I have on, and what clothes I pick to wear that day! I can't imagine the difference if I had a different hair color, skin color, or completely different appearance.

I'm not knocking guys I'm sure girls are just as bad with stereotypes. Despite all the "progress" we have supposedly made, stereotypes still rule the world!

So the next time you are tempted to treat someone a certain way just because of how they look, maybe think twice? You might thank me later!

You didn't think to consider that guys tend to be more attracted to feminine girls and that's the reason you get a different kind of attention from men when you dress girly?
Aside from treating you like you're dumber and not taking you seriously (which you offered no examples of so not sure kind of things you specifically refer to there), I don't really see what you've described as "stereotyping".

The stereotype that blondes are less smart, and girls who spend time to look pretty are dumber. So if she is blonde and tries to look nice on a certain day, certain people automatically assume she is some dumb airhead and treat her accordingly. This is the stereotyping she was referring to.

Oh I hear ya girl. As a blonde girl who enjoys being feminine, I can relate to this. But I also see that only certain type of people would take those stereotypes seriously, they are not that bright themselves. So it's kind of a nice filter at the same time.

Appearance is everything. I, as a mid-twenties man, can go into a restaurant in a hoodie, faded jeans, and converse and get shit service OR I can go in with a button down shirt and khakis and a confident presence and get treated with much more respect. Appearance is the basis on how you will be treated. Love it or hate it, it's not changing anytime soon.

Those aren't stereotypes as something malevolent, or as some brain dead SWJs would put it, "just a social construct".

Those reactions are about very human nature in combination with environment. We ALL pick up on little signals and every piece of info we can get, so that we may navigate our environment faster. You will NEVER EVER get rid of them.
Your own brain is riddled with small biases and most of those are a very good thing. Like a biological bias to feel fear what a person who is very weird comes around. It can save your life.

If you want to handle the world better, accept that the world will change, but it's always an evolution and never a revolution. Revolutions are just small markers at the end of an era, not actual change. And most of the time, they don't happen at all.

If you don't want to feel bad about a stereotype anymore, it's not the world you change it's yourself. So when someone thinks you're a bimbo, you can put them in their place by just being you.
And sometimes you change yourself as well, because you're not alone in the world either. Whole of society is a compromise.

Stereotyping and categorizing people is what has kept us alive all these centuries. How you dress is a very accurate representation of yourself. This is why you dress professionally to a job interview. This is why people who dye their hair stupid colors (pink, blue... etc) are not taken seriously and never hold decent jobs like doctors, lawyers... etc. This is why people avoid homeless/unkept looking people, and why we let our guards down around well-dressed people.

True that some stereotypes are annoying, like people assuming you're dumb because you're blond and dressed casually that day. I would say you are probably a slave to your own perceived stereotypes more than you believe.

I have met nobody... NOBODY... who does not act upon their own perceived stereotypes. The truth is, those tho claim they do not do it, are the worst offenders.

In fact in the UK they have passed the "Masogynist Hate Crime" which makes it illegal to talk to strange women in public. I feel your pain, I deal with similar situations constantly. It irritates the hell out of me, that I can talk to someone on the phone and be treated like an intelligent adult. Than have a personal meeting with that person, and all of a sudden I am talked to like I am a child with a learning disability that does not understand the English language. Despite the fact that we had a conversed or multiple conversations over the phone.

People also look at my features and complexion and make assumptions about my racial heritage, the funny part about this is that I am almost always mistake for being Hispanic which I am not.

Have you ever thought about what creates stereotypes and why people have them?

Hint: It's a biological necessity. We have to judge people quickly to figure out quickly if they are a threat or not. This is a very evolutionary trait that we NEED to have

And such a trait doesn't vanish out of our system because we had a few years of security and wealth behind us. Millions of years of evolution ain't gonna change in 3 or 4 decades.

So instead of bitching about stereotypes and wanting for them to vanish, how about just accepting them and be open to give people the benefit of a doubt?

I'm not very stereotypical, mostly because I don't really care about women's looks (no matter the hair color or the clothes they wear) since I'm not attracted to it (one reason why I won't have a girlfriend or get married). Hopefully, these stereotypes won't bother you so much, and if someone does call you "dumb" because you changed your looks, then I recommend to either ignore them or report it if it becomes worse for you. Stereotypes I'm afraid to say aren't gonna go away for good, but there are ways to stand against it if you begin to suffer from it. Good luck.

Yep. Out of the 8 blondes I have personally known in life, only 2 of them have been average or smart. I have no idea what spawned the dumb blonde stereotype, as stereotypes are born put of some type of observable truth.

What I mean is, when I wear a vibrant colored weave and big ol cheap hoop earrings, I am treated with more caution than when I wear my natural hair straightened and a nice tee / with jeans lol

Black or hispanic men approach me more cheap hood style, whereas white, Asian, and middle eastern men approach me most when I have a fro' and African printed dress lol

The idea is that my fro' / rasta like braids and ancestral prints make me come off more down to earth and spiritual which sends off better "vibes" than the Lahay-nay look.

How many races automatically see a black person and register the race as smart? Straight to the point only Asians are considered intelligent in society automatically and for good reason, we all know how strict the education can be in many Asian countries. Blonde people being dumb is obviously just a stereotype (even though I'm blonde and dumb as fuck), however I wouldn't consider being "feminine" or "masculine" stereotypes but more societal norms because they have their basis in reality. Women tend to be and behave more feminine and men tend to be and behave more masculine (which has a lot to do with our biology) so society tends to expect that more.

Well, one reason that people are tempted to treat others differently based on how they look is that they are ATTRACTED to them and are trying to build rapport or otherwise get the attention of the person of interest. So in that sense it makes perfect sense that people (particularly guys) would treat you differently when you look nice.

Personally, I prefer girls who wear jeans and sneakers rather than some "girly girl" clothes.
I have lots of friends who are blondes, and they are quite smart, so the stereotype about "stupid blondes" is just a myth, created by fake blondes like Marilyn Monroe.
