The Main Reason Why I Think New Year's Resolutions Are Pointless

Yeah, I know. New Year's day was two weeks ago and I'm late for making this mytake, but it's something that has been pondering my mind for a while now. People all the time would make goals for the new year for theirselves to overcome, whether that be getting into shape or trying to be the best version of yourself. After about two weeks in, their motivation to achieve those goals crumbles and they are left with the same person that they were before the New Year arrived. All the time, my friends and family would ask me what my New Year's resolution is and I would reply that I don't have any. I see it as pointless to even create one. So without further adieu, here's why I think creating a New Year's resolution is pointless.

The main reason that creating a New Year's resolution is pointless is because there is a lack of motivation and determination behind what you are doing. You are creating a goal just to create one. There is no drive behind that goal other than a silly New Year's tradition. Let's say that your New Year's resolution is to go to the gym (I'm going to use this same example for the rest of this mytake because this seems like the most common resolution and the easiest one for me to talk about since I love going to the gym too). You start going to the gym, like most other people at the beginning of January, because you've made it your New Year's resolution to get fit. After about a week or two of working out, you start to realize that you aren't seeing immediate results and that this "working out" stuff isn't an easy feat. That is when you lose all motivation to go work out and go back to your regular old self.

The issue here is that you're only motivation is backed by a tradition. There is no inner drive within you to go workout. Being in shape is a lifestyle, not a tradition. I'll give you an example of why I go to the gym. The main reason I go is because I want to attract attractive girls. Now I know what you're thinking. How is that any different than going to the gym because of a New Year's resolution? The difference is the motivation behind it. It wouldn't be that different if you had an extremely strong sense of determination from a New Year's tradition, but most people don't have that sort of determination for such an insignificant thing.

For me, ever since high school girls have turned me down. Rejection after rejection. After getting rejected so many times by these attractive girls, I started to conduct my own research as to why that is. The reason is because I'm ugly, plain and simple. It wasn't because of my "personality" (if that were so, I would have a girlfriend by now considering the attractive friends who are girls have all said I had a great personality, yet still won't date me) it was because I wan't attractive enough. I was way too skinny. My face didn't look very symmetrical and my head-to-body ratio was way off (with my head being bigger than my body). By the time I was in my third year of high school, I saw that the only way I would attract these attractive girls is if I were to go to the gym and achieve the optimum muscularity and physique that would attract the most attractive girls.

And so with that, I started my journey. I started researching how I can grow my muscles and what exercises to do. I was in the gym starting out at three times a week, then progressing to five times a week with my life goal in mind of having an attractive girlfriend. People didn't understand why I worked so hard in the gym, but I didn't care. I had (and still have) a goal in mind and I wanted to achieve it no matter what. Most people don't understand that sort of determination to achieve something, especially something like being attractive to attractive women. It's why I usually don't bother explaining my motivation, but because of my goal I was able to go from a 5'8 scrawny 110 pounds to a more athletic, but still skinny 5'8 140 pounds in a four year timespan. I am not at the optimum muscularity and physique that will attract attractive women, but I'm getting there. I believe that the optimum point for me would be around the 160 pound mark. It wasn't based off of a silly resolution, but a goal driven by a want for a girlfriend who I (and others) find beautiful, numerous past rejections, and teasing. Call me shallow if you wish, it doesn't change my passion for achieving this goal. I'm not saying unattractive girls are horrible people, I'm just saying that I wouldn't date them. Just like a lot of girls wouldn't date unattractive guys either.

Now, this can be applied to any goal you have in life. It obviously doesn't have to be my goal in order for you to have the same determination as me. What I am saying though, is that 99% of the time, you won't find that sort of determination in a New Year's Resolution. My advice to anyone reading this is to find something that drives you. A goal to work towards to. For me, it is attracting attractive girls. For you, it might be catching a bass. I don't know. Whatever it is, make sure that it has a meaning. New Year Resolutions have no meaning behind them and that is often times why Resolutioners fail in achieving their goals. I'm not saying that you should never participate in creating a New Year's Resolution. If you want to do that, by all means go ahead. But if you are serious about achieving that goal, personally I don't think using a New Year's resolution is the best motivation to achieve that goal. And with that, this concludes my mytake.
