I think guys would reply messages late on purpose as to appear busy and indifferent. For the same reason there exists the 3 days rule where you only call a chick 3 days after you get her phone number. It's like that so that the girl wouldn't feel the guy is chasing her and is focused only on her which makes him wimpy and unattractive.
Would I do the same? Probably not, if I like talking to a girl I'd might as well do it all day long if we both enjoy it - there's no reason not to unless I'm really busy. But then again, I am usually quite busy in my life so my time constraint isn't on purpose.

Well with me, it's not that I purposely reply late to be malicious, it's that either I don't want to reply right away to seem clingy/needy or that I want to say the right thing. I don't do this myself, but some guys play hard to get. If you think this is the case IMO they are not worth your time. My suggestion is to relax. Usually I know with me, when something like this happens my fears and anxieties get the best of me, and the worse case scenario is usually not what is happening.

It could be possible that the guy is very nervous and is scared about if he says the right thing so he either takes the time to think it over and get the right response OR he could be trying to avoid contact if he likes you and he gets socially anxious.
never on purpose...im always afraid shell sign off lol...but somtimes I gotta get food or take a whiz so my responses can get delayed sometimes...
