Is it child abuse to call your kid ugly?

Okay so I've heard several parents call their kids ugly or tell them they'd never amount to much in life I used to have friends with parents who'd say this to them and I sadly i can relate to them with the being called ugly and stupid. It seems normal to me now to be called these things now. Including a couple death threats I'd get every now and then.

I watched a video about a mother going on about how disgusting, ugly and basically what a failure her daughter was. The mother was overweight, and a single mother. they lived in a pretty poor environment and I think the teenage girl was being neglected by her overweight single mother. Isn't this child abuse?

It’s definitely a form of abuse because it impresses the mind of their kids that they have no self-worth, likewise eventually they’ll have no self-respect. Kids minds are like a sponge because the mind soaks up everything it sees and hears, and if it’s repeated enough times a kid will actually begin to see that as the standard. It’s like they get programed. Most kids that come from positive families grow up with positive thoughts that the world is a nice place to live and that they can achieve success and contribute something good to this world. The opposite is true of those kids brought in negative families or a negative mother or father that they’ll never amount to much and that they’ll never look acceptable to others. I feel so sorry for children brought up that way because they’ll really have to struggle double hard to achieve anything to get their self-worth back. Like you said, “it seems normal to me now to be called these things.” I say it’s a form of child abuse, probably the worst form because it can interfere with the normal functions of the mind which will control their life.

It is a form of abuse, yes. But the real world is a cruel place. Sooner or later people have to realize that not everyone gets a trophy, and not everyone is special. By no means am I advocating what happened in this case, but the reality of life is that it's harder than most people think.

I pretty much have never been called pretty or beautiful by my own parents. I have been told I'm fat or I look bad on the regular though. And it's not helpful or constructive critisism. I do think it's a form of abuse because when a child on hears the negative then they grow up with a very warped sense of self - as I did. Your mother should be the person to tell you you're beautiful and that they love you - no matter what they look like. My mother always said she would never lie to me to tell me I'm beautiful because lying to me would do me no good. And guess what? I pretty much know I'm ugly because if my own mother thinks so then how would anyone else think otherwise?

Feel free to say that. I mean my mum is a great mum in other aspects. I've always been fed and clothed and she works really hard but I have never felt loved nor good enough from her. She did the best she could I guess.

He's had a messed up childhood. He's the product of rape. He was put up for adoption and lived in children's homes for a while then lived with his mother again and she wasn't a good mother. So they both probably shouldn't have had kids.

Yes it's abuse. I've got a 3 year old that I tell her like if she's spits on me, which she gets a 3 min time out, or she tells another kid I don't like you or such that the way she's acting is ugly and that wasn't nice/rude we don't do or say such things. A parent is supposed to nurture and discipline a child so that child will grow up with morals, values and to show people respect but no doormat either. Build self esteem not tear the child down.

If a lot of people call my daughter ugly, rather than i say she's ugly, I'll give him some advice or motivate her to look more beautiful and people respect her. It's not only about from the outside look but also from the inside. I also will help her to find her inner beauty so she can show it proudly
