Should we send Death Row prisoners to Mars to prepare sites for colonization?

To save the state money should Death Row prisoners be given a chance to go to Mars to prepare and build a colony site. In exchange for their hard work they would be given a pardon if they didn't return to Earth and be allowed to say there and live free. I'm sure a lot of them would agree to do so if they were allowed to restart on a new world and not be put to death. They might even reform and be hard workers. Aye or Nay?

In terms of pros and cons, I think there are certainly pros, but I think the cons ultimately outweigh the good points.

Sending death row inmates takes some of the hesitancy regarding risk, and it would reduce the cost of pay for their work. (I.e. no astronaut wages)

However, the cons of that are ultimately numerous.
— The inmates would likely need significant education on various necessary subjects to ensure proper equipment usage. The training would have to be done by professionals, and the professionals would cost

— Personality issues and concerns. I.e. why are they on death row? There are lots of variables that may affect performance. Their goal is likely freedom, not the betterment of science or interest in Mars. Likewise, putting a bunch of inmates and leaving them together for an indefinite period of time with millions of dollars worth of equipments thousands of miles away seems problematic.

— Press concern. I can guess it would be a PR nightmare. On one side, you’ll have humanitarians or whatnot saying that you’re treating inmates as disposable. They’ll flame you for that. On the other side, you’ll have normal citizens who would likely love to be in the inmates position— free education, free trip to mars. It’d be assuming the risk, but I believe that wouldn’t phase all. People will say the inmates are being rewarded, then they’ll flame you for that.

— This is pretty hypothetical since I don’t think we’re near this point, but presuming we make inmates the first flight down, it may lead to issues down the line when others choose to go to Mars. I don’t trust human nature enough to say that it’d be problem free when there are two factions easily made— inmates/non inmates. It’d be so far away, I can imagine problems similar to the Wild West— there’s less law enforcement, so there’s less consequences and more chaos.

I would not want to have them risk the valuable equipment up there. Besides its not like there are no deaths in the first place so I think we just have to get used to the idea that more astronauts will die. Its incredibly unrealistic to pretend otherwise.

That's why you send them first. If they don't make it the state saves the bother of executing them. I read the government is again starting to execute those on death row.

They can't be trusted to act responsibility and will probably neglect their duties and just ruin all the equipment - maybe attempt suicide before they get there.

Yeah, you'll save the money on their execution and incarceration period. But you've gotta train them with new style of livelihood, educate them, test them, filter them etc which in itself is a process.

No people with advanced degrees in the skills necessary to travel to Mars in a safe manner don't usually end up on death row and sending uneducated people to Mars is basically a billion dollar execution

It currently cost around $10000/ pound to send something to space or around $2000000 to send a person to space for that price you could do around 121 lethal injection, 1000000 firing squad execution, around 1500000 nitrogen gas executions and about 6500 electric chair execution at for that amount of money
