In this case, “mainstream source” in science means consensus. Which is the gold standard for facts. I will hear out unscientific claims but they will remain unscientific until they use science.
I think it's people understanding of science. Skepticism is the foundational thought in the scientific method. The goal is to prove the hypothesis wrong.

If we want to be technical, much of what science holds to be true is "unscientific" in that it cannot be tested by the scientific method.
