It's easier to be hateful than try to do something positive. It's also the way our brains work, with grouping people and causality. If the virus came from asia, then the virus came from Asians, then it came from Asian culture, hence viruses come from Asians.
Forget that gunpowder and a lot of good things came from asia while we were still in the dark ages. I see what you're talking about a lot with my wife. Honestly I have her carrying a gun wherever she goes, and usually me going out with the kids unless it's to visit family.
Outright hostility I'm not seeing much of, but looks and reactions that weren't there before. She definitely gets treated differently at doctors and the hospital, so I bring the girls whenever that comes up.
A lot of it that will not go away for a long time is how much people want someone to be at fault, and will always believe it is an engineered virus, though oddly no one asks that of ebola, or prions. Same with why didn't china react better and be more open about a completely unknown and unidentified virus. They may people like crap, but on that one I'll call it like george bush, it was an unknown unknown, nothing you can do there.
Regardless, being Asian right now is being the new jew, everyone wants your services and goods, but doesn't want you in their neighborhood.
It's a strange, fearful world we live in.

The truth is, these people already hated East Asians. They are simply using the virus as an excuse to justify and express their hatred.
Like another user on this post said, "There were plenty of reasons to hate East Asians before COVID"
But why do YOU care about East Asians, when they consider you guys inferior?
My mom was right, when it comes down to it, all Asians unite together. Duterte almost went to war with China over the Parcel Islands, now he is defending Chinese. Asians can't be trusted.
Why are Asians angry for being racially profiled because of the coronavirus, when they did the same exact thing to blacks during the Ebola outbreak?
I'm still waiting for you to ask, "My fellow Asians, why do we treat foreigners like shit in our countries?"
It pisses me off that these so called "victims of racism", think people just hate them for no reason.
What they did was great definition of terrorism. Created the virus in their labs and informed the rest of the world way too late. I don't know why hypocrites still hate on middle easterners for 11th of September thing and no one cares, but have to act like snowflakes when it comes to East Asians , what they did was just as tragic, or even worse.
everyone wants someone to blame. it's not the East Asian people's fault, of course, but since the coronavirus originated from there it is an easy excuse for racism. and there has always been racism, as well as religious bias. occasionally it does inflate.

It’s scapegoating. People always like to blame someone.
- u
People are angry about the restrictions we are forced to endure and human nature leads many of them to seek someone to blame. It is not logical.
I would say that since the 50s, the US media/govt/people tend to blame the declines of our country on China, Russia, and Mexico.. (basically any countries which our military could never overpower) This disgusting practice has led to a normalization of racial bigotry towards people from these places.
Personally, I can't stand it, and I don't stand for it under any circumstance!
Our problems are our own, and they certainly aren't the blame of any Asians (except maybe the specific individuals or companies who were careless with their genetic engineering of dangerous viruses, in this case.)I don't have any hate or anger, at all toward any Asians! Why? Maybe the Chinese made some mistakes, and didn't realize what was happening, but how could they know, when NOBODY KNOWS!!
Everyone makes mistakes, and it is so easy to hate, and judge. I think it is better to try to help, fix, and save the ones we can, now that this has happened.
It wasn't like they did it on purpose, to hurt people!!
I wish I could remember who said, "Never attribute to malice, that which is best explained by ignorance. . ." The vast majority of people don't try to hurt others, intentionally, but they sometimes make bad choices or mistakes.
Leave the judgement in the dirt, and let's just focus on caring for the sick, and preventing the spread!!I disagree with the premise. It's not hatred. It's understandable caution.
And its not Thais or Filipinos or Vietnamese or Laotians. It's Chinese.
And it disappoints me that an Asian girl, still capable of logical, critical thinking, unlike many Americans, is playing the victim card. You are above us on the bell curve.
You did nothing wrong. But there is a surplus of reasons to "hate" the Chinese Communist Party, which is responsible for the epidemic. Many, including myself, believe there was an element of intent, since they are responsible for the largest genocide in history, during Mao's Great Leap Forward, approaching 100 million Chinese.
It is reasonable, unfortunately, to associate Chinese with the virus. Many came here before it was exposed. Did they have the virus? Who did they contact? Who did their contacts contact?
Don't feel. Think!People use it as an excuse to show their reserved racist perspective of other cultures. Being weiry of China is mostly fine as that's where the outbreak started but any other country is really just stretching things due to both their lack of involvement in this and the fact that their infection rates aren't that bad compared to the rest of the world, really. My stance hasn't changed since the epidemic started, besides a bit more aggravation at the Chinese government for letting theses sorts of food preperation conditions and ingrediants legally slide.
I don't know why I don't like it either. But I think it's just the news blowing it out of proportion and also the internet attracting unpleasant people.
A disease is a natural event that happens every generation or so. It happens all over the world including America and Western nations. Have you heard of SmallPox or Spanish Flu?
No one would go and blame White People in general for SmallPox. This behavior is just from who don't want to want to take the easy route of hating and closing their minds.Personally, I have no hate towards East Asian people or any racial or ethnic group, it's the Chinese Government I have a hatred for and think is primary to blame for this outbreak since they never regulated the wet markets, hid crucial information about COVID-19 when it was most dire and persecuted the scientists who were doing valuable research about it. I'm going to blame their Government, not their citizens, not their culture, not their race and not their ethnicity.
As for the rest of Americans, most of us don't blame Asians, it's just that the media wants to highlight the very few cases for viewership, and for the ones who do blame Asians are just racist water headed tribalists.Because the virus coincidentally started in East Asia. So they are convenient to blame, instead of having to accept that it is a natural disaster that no one has control over. Humans don't like the feeling of not having control. Terrifies them to their core.
Not my own thoughts but here a few reasons.
The virus comes from China.
Cases of chinese people bringing back the virus with them while traveling or going back to other countries.
China trying its best to not only make people forget where the virus came from and how they handled the situation, while trying to make people feel guilty if they are talking about it, saying it's racist.
Overall, mainland chinese people don't have a good reputation, they're seen as vulgar, without manner, dirty and disrespectful.
Asian communities are in general the most respected in western countries, since they're seen as hard-working, respectful, willing to integrate and law-abiding, unlike mainland chinese people.
But the fear that one of those people could go and visit family in China and come back contaminated is there, and sometimes it was true. All of this will pass soon, but now, we live in a time when people are scared, and fear isn't a good muse. It's simple for me! People are real stupid and them thinking about the virus came from there so it means there is a possibility if you look like an Asian that means you have been there and you could transmit the virus to them, somehow.
There is a movie named Idiocracy that shows how stupid people can get (from comedy perspective) but it's scary because people are really this stupid.i think this short cdc article on a study conducted in 2009 explains a lot of questions. it might also have answered the question if they were testing on the bats
https://www.cdc.gov/flu/other/bat-flu.htmlI've only seen hate for the chinese government, not Asians in general. And China deserves all the hate, they should have been less concerned with their appearances and more concerned with helping their citizens. Seeing a lot of assholes here who thinks its unfair to judge the chinese government so harshly and I dont understand why you wouldn't be a bit frustrated that one countries negligence has now impacted almost the entire globe.
Some people are idiots.
I mean there have been cases of vandalism just a city over where I live and there's some people that even started patrolling Chinatown.
I mean it's the same bull crap that formed the Black Panthers and then eventually the Crips and Bloods.
I don't think it's going to get so bad to the point of forming Asian gangs. But... Who knows?People are scared. And lot of disinformation and rumor mongering happening all around. It's sad that the virus got out of the lab, and the Chinese govt. has to take the blame. But, they try to hide everything all the time. Am sure, the hate you see or say, is mostly coz people are scared. Nothing to do personally with east Asians am sure. And I have many Asian friends. Even they are unhappy with their government, but they can't do anything. Their hands are tied.
Because of the West losing their ideological and cultural hegemonic grip over the world to the East and America losing their political and economic hegemony to China, so they have to revive the old Yellow Peril and the Red Scare to a lesser extent as a way to attack the credibility of China and justify their aggressive attempts to curb the rise of Asia and forestall their own decline. It's pure propaganda, info warfare, and psyop from an empire on its death throes.
There isn't. Just because we are pointing out that china caused this, that its their fault and they are corrupt doesn't mean every one has decided to hate east Asians.
I think people already hate East Asians like how they treat animals so horribly
https://www.youtube.com/embed/B-aXwsIRWNshttps://www.youtube.com/embed/SNn98RiVhKchttps://www.youtube.com/embed/6XMMXKOZK3oYou say that like there was much there before. If it's one thing about Asian women I know non Asian guys are for fun Chinese guys are for marriage. Your parents would never accept a "non pure blood" in your family so not sure why your complaining.
You as women also have communist thinking you don't think with an open mind you think with a controlled mind what person could love that?I would say the intelligence of racists is so insignificant - they aren't worth fretting over unless they are co workers or people you can't avoid like mother in laws etc...
