It's easier to be hateful than try to do something positive. It's also the way our brains work, with grouping people and causality. If the virus came from asia, then the virus came from Asians, then it came from Asian culture, hence viruses come from Asians.
Forget that gunpowder and a lot of good things came from asia while we were still in the dark ages. I see what you're talking about a lot with my wife. Honestly I have her carrying a gun wherever she goes, and usually me going out with the kids unless it's to visit family.
Outright hostility I'm not seeing much of, but looks and reactions that weren't there before. She definitely gets treated differently at doctors and the hospital, so I bring the girls whenever that comes up.
A lot of it that will not go away for a long time is how much people want someone to be at fault, and will always believe it is an engineered virus, though oddly no one asks that of ebola, or prions. Same with why didn't china react better and be more open about a completely unknown and unidentified virus. They may people like crap, but on that one I'll call it like george bush, it was an unknown unknown, nothing you can do there.

What they did was great definition of terrorism. Created the virus in their labs and informed the rest of the world way too late. I don't know why hypocrites still hate on middle easterners for 11th of September thing and no one cares, but have to act like snowflakes when it comes to East Asians , what they did was just as tragic, or even worse.
i don't think that the East Asian people created the virus in their labs, because well first of all, it's pretty hard to do and if that was the case, they may have not spread it as much to every country and rather just political enemies. however yes, some people definitely still hate on Muslims and Middle Eastern people for 9/11, yet another example of religious hate/racism. and i also do think that if the other countries became aware of the virus sooner, we could have taken action and this whole mess may have been prevented.

I would say that since the 50s, the US media/govt/people tend to blame the declines of our country on China, Russia, and Mexico.. (basically any countries which our military could never overpower) This disgusting practice has led to a normalization of racial bigotry towards people from these places.

People use it as an excuse to show their reserved racist perspective of other cultures. Being weiry of China is mostly fine as that's where the outbreak started but any other country is really just stretching things due to both their lack of involvement in this and the fact that their infection rates aren't that bad compared to the rest of the world, really. My stance hasn't changed since the epidemic started, besides a bit more aggravation at the Chinese government for letting theses sorts of food preperation conditions and ingrediants legally slide.

Personally, I have no hate towards East Asian people or any racial or ethnic group, it's the Chinese Government I have a hatred for and think is primary to blame for this outbreak since they never regulated the wet markets, hid crucial information about COVID-19 when it was most dire and persecuted the scientists who were doing valuable research about it. I'm going to blame their Government, not their citizens, not their culture, not their race and not their ethnicity. As for the rest of Americans, most of us don't blame Asians, it's just that the media wants to highlight the very few cases for viewership, and for the ones who do blame Asians are just racist water headed tribalists.
Because the virus coincidentally started in East Asia. So they are convenient to blame, instead of having to accept that it is a natural disaster that no one has control over. Humans don't like the feeling of not having control. Terrifies them to their core.
But China could have controlled it. Taiwan did an amazing job controlling it. The scale this pandemic is out now was avoidable. That is what frustrates me anyway.

Our government knew about the virus before it was a major issue and they too failed to contain or control it. They didn't even take it seriously until it was far too late. The virus comes from China. Cases of chinese people bringing back the virus with them while traveling or going back to other countries. China trying its best to not only make people forget where the virus came from and how they handled the situation, while trying to make people feel guilty if they are talking about it, saying it's racist. Overall, mainland chinese people don't have a good reputation, they're seen as vulgar, without manner, dirty and disrespectful.
Asian communities are in general the most respected in western countries, since they're seen as hard-working, respectful, willing to integrate and law-abiding, unlike mainland chinese people. But the fear that one of those people could go and visit family in China and come back contaminated is there, and sometimes it was true. All of this will pass soon, but now, we live in a time when people are scared, and fear isn't a good muse.
It's simple for me! People are real stupid and them thinking about the virus came from there so it means there is a possibility if you look like an Asian that means you have been there and you could transmit the virus to them, somehow. There is a movie named Idiocracy that shows how stupid people can get (from comedy perspective) but it's scary because people are really this stupid.

I've only seen hate for the chinese government, not Asians in general. And China deserves all the hate, they should have been less concerned with their appearances and more concerned with helping their citizens. Itβs not East Asian as much as it is the Chinese, and not so much the Chinese as it is the Chinese government messing up... again. But that really strains peoples tolerance of the other gross aspects of their culture. Eg, wet markets. But again whatβs making it harder to let stuff like that slide is everyone noticing how awful China gov is, and they conflating China and Chinese people.

I have not noticed hate toward East Asians, but I have noticed a LOT of hate toward the Chinese government, and that is well deserved. Their irresponsible behavior and dishonesty have cost hundreds of thousands of lives and literally destroyed the world economy and ruined the livelihoods of countless people the world over.
The Chinese government may have fucked up but the Chinese people are not to blame! They are just as much of a victim in this as everyone else. Their government failed them.
Hate derives from fear and a feeling of being exposed. In the face of being unable to 'do something about it' on one's own, it's a typically human response to pick a scape goat to compensate for feelings of inferiority or powerlessness.

I live in a small town so I just might not being seeing it. But we do have a LOT of Asians living in our town. No one is ever rude to them or avoids them. We don't blame Asians. We blame the Chines Government.
@theone121 For hiding Covid-19 for so long. As soon as it broke out in china, they should've warned everyone. Instead they imprisoned anyone who tried to mention it until it spread throughout the whole world. Just to cover their own asses and save face.
If they knew about it why would they hide it? Surely they would wanna be open about it so that scientists across the world can help them find a cure to it right? That way it's a win win. Cases in China decrease, and it doesn't spread to other countries and start affecting them

China hid the gravity of their situation to save face in front of the rest of the world and in doing so caused this pandemic to spiral out of control in their country. They were more concerned with appearing like they had things under control than actually having things under control. Because admitting to there being a problem to them is akin to them admitting they fucked up and need help.
