Do you ever profile someone based on his or her physical appearance?

I don’t judge or profile people based on the typical demographics (Race, religion, sexual orientation etc).

However, I do tend to automatically assume that a person (especially a youngster) is a troublemaker if he or she is wearing a combo of a hoodie with sweatpants, skinny jeans or saggy pants because those are the typical outfits of anarchists and criminals.

I mean this from the heart. I genuinely only fear someone if they don’t smile or act respectfully to me. So, if a guy is full of tattoos, piercings or whatever but he’s polite and genuine, I just don’t see the tattoos and piercings in an alarming way.

But if he’s intoxicated, loud and angry, then I’m going to scan his clothing, style anything in a bid to gather more information. I’m not saying someone should be looked down upon just because they are minding they’re own business but are not smiling. But if his behaviour is worrying to me, then i will start to gather more information. Having said that, if he’s dressed like a librarian but he’s behaving in a worrisome way, I’d still avoid him and get out of his space and quick. People see you how you treat them. Excluding the other types of people who judge you for the wildest, unfair assumptions just based on a photograph.

For safety and convenience you always judge a book by its cover or by steretype. I think it's completely normal and removing that basic behaviour from our nature can often put a person in danger. What's important is to keep and open mind in case they surprise you and you only want to be positively surprised.

I actually agree with you on this. How a person dresses, grooms, carries themselves is a statement of who they are and a reflection of their character. It's true anyone can fake it, but generally they don't. People usually dress like their characteristic.

I absolutely love observing people and believe many use their appearance to show parts of themselves but I do prefer observing their behavior & manners.

I'm also aware that the judgement I pass on them is from a momentary observation and soley from my perspective - it isn't set in stone.

Everyone does. If I see a person decked out in leather and heavy boots, I may assume that person
likes to ride motorcycles. If I see a person dressed in their favorite team's gear I may assume
they are sports fans
