How do you feel when you see healthy people still masking?

I went to get a haircut today. When I parked I noticed a mother (guessing late 30s to mid 40s) and her teen daughter get in a car right in front of me. They were both masked.

Masking debatably had its purpose during the pandemic. Although I believe cloth masking had only negligible benefits I can understand why vulnerable people took precautions and might be still paranoid.

But when I see perfectly young and healthy people masking I think they are trying to make some sort of stupid ass political statement. Either that they feel “safer” if they are more covered.

Maybe the the mother and daughter were “vulnerable” to covid but I somehow doubt it. Especially the teen girl.

Just for the record I would never say anything to anyone masking. Do as you please.

However I am making an observation though. Why the hell are young and healthy people still doing this? To give off an “identity” or something? People are vaccinated (forced to actually). The pandemic is over. But I feel like some people want this change to be permanent.

I don't care that they are wearing masks.

How is my life affected by the fact that they are wearing masks? Maybe they are vulnerable. Maybe it makes them feel safe. Maybe they are infected, and trying not to spread it. Maybe they like the way it looks.

None of those reasons affect me in any way, so why would it even matter. I don't pay the slightest bit of attention. If they want to wear their masks, that's their decision, and I don't care any more than I care what shirt they're wearing, or what car they're driving.

Well it’s not like I am going to go out of my way to say something. But I don’t respect it when people make a “political” statement with this crap. Like I am more socially enlightened and aware so i need to wear a mask.

I personally prefer to wear a mask, both to protect myself, and my family, so I'm just a little more ambivalent about others that wear masks, even if they appear healthy.

People don't know why I wear one (my SO is vulnerable, so I don't want to bring it home to her), so I don't try to guess at why others do, either.

Wearing masks in public has made social sense for a very long time which is why you see it regularly in other places around the world, most notably in Asia. You are also still in an active pandemic so it makes doubly sense, even for healthy people.

They WERE mother and daughter, or you BELIEVE they were mother and daughter? You don’t know if one was immunocompromised. You have no idea why they were in the car together.

Well it definitely looked that way.

I of course am not ever going to say anything. They can do what they want. But I do get annoyed that some people do this for a “political” stance or something. They weren’t even inside a building. They both took their masks off when they got in the car.

I do it to be polite to people who worry about getting sick, and also to lower my risk of infection but I think my infection risk is low, I just do it to avoid annoying people who care about masking.

Cloth masking overs very negligible benefits. It didn’t stop omicron from spreading.

However I given your perspective I “sorta” understand. But as “ I just do it to avoid annoying people who care about masking.” the HELL with them. It would be a different story in the beginning of the pandemic when no vaccine was available and we didn’t know what we were dealing with. But it’s definitely not that way now.

It doesn't bother me.
If it makes them happy, feel safe, then by all means wear one.
We are still required to wear them during patient contact, and once we get to the hospital.

Masks are still mostly required where I live, so makes no difference to me. I enjoy wearing a mask. It helps with my social anxiety because my face is half hidden.

Well yeah obviously, I’m sure I’ll conquer that fear in my own time. Doesn’t mean I can’t enjoy the comfort of being able to wear a mask in public for the meantime though ☺️

Things don’t always magically solve themselves just because you get older. Some things can actually get worse unless you make a conscious effort to change.

They can do what they want. Like I said earlier I would never say anything.

But look at petitedollbabes’ response above. She said the mask helps with her “social anxiety”. I have social anxiety but I know hiding myself doesn’t help. This has turned more into a “social pandemic” then a medical one for many people.
