When did people start losing their morals?

Question

I mean society is society and people make UP society, and so I keep hearing older folks who say times were BETTER back then in comparison to now.

When I look around, I DO see a change for the worse in society. ... But I want to know WHY? !

What happened!

Was society JUST as bad back then just covered up more? Or do people just have on their ROSE-COLORED glasses from the past? ! Any ideas? !

Frankly also, I don't think I agree with people freely SMOKING indoors by the way. There's people with Asthma, COPD, bronchitis, weak lungs, etc. and I DOUBT that that would have been a healthy environment for them! The only reason you don't see people being/getting sick from it is because they were still young and you often don't feel the affects till you're older. This was also just a single point in time, AND the affects are mostly internal...

In the second video from 1983, I was either in my mother's womb at the time or not even conceived yet, depending on the month.

I don’t know when back then was. But I don’t agree.

Things that were worse:
1. Gay marriage wasn’t legal all over the USA.
2. There were a lot more homophobic hate crimes.
3. Interracial marriage wasn’t illegal.
4. It was much more socially acceptable to be openly racist.
5. We had “ugly laws” witch put people with disabilities in underfunded institutions where they were not cared for properly and not free.
6. It was more socially acceptable to see people with disabilities as less then.
7. Marital rape was legal (aka you could legally rape your spouse)

8. Consent was scene more as a if they’re not fighting or telling you to stop it’s ok

9. Men were seen as weak or gay for showing emotions and it was a social stigma that men couldn’t get raped by women.

Good things:

1. There weren’t very many people addicted to screens.
2. There wasn’t so much loneliness.
3. There wasn’t so much fear about speaking your mind in an un PC way.
4. There wasn’t as much gun violence.
5. The environment was healthier

6. The world wasn’t so crowded.
7. People ate more plant based diets

8. People weren’t ashamed to be adult virgins.
9. Not as many people were committing suicide.

Eh I think people just became less fake with themselves lacking morals. Back in the day I feel like a lot more people put on a fake show to pretend they were classy because being yourself was frowned upon.

I do not agree that things were better in the past. When my parents were kids, you had to sew your own clothes cause it cost too much money to buy them from the store. You had to use clothe instead of diapers cause diapers had not been invented yet. You had to take trains instead of planes cause normal people did not have access to an airplane. Many diseases killed people in history that would not kill them today because of medical discoveries. My grandpa died from a preventable illness because his treatment was not discovered until he died. My grandpas brother was murdered by a soldier during the war. My grandmas feet had damaged bone fragments because of Chinese foot binding traditions during the time of the emperor. Women had to give birth without epidurals and my very strong cousin wanted to kill herself during her labour because of how bad her pain was. Also back then, there wasn't technology for insect management and my family would get moth in their home a lot. They had to dust and clean the entire house every single day of their lives because of how dirty homes were before technology made them clean. The only thing is - suicide rates are higher now that life is easier for the majority of people across the globe, I believe its because people have forgotten the meaning of life because their life is no longer hard. Their capacity to love has been diminished because of their wealth.

I some things were better "back then" although I know many will disagree with me on that. Certainly some things are better now. As just one example, I think the internet has brought horrific things with it but the ability to meet people here on GaG is one example of one of the benefits. While I love sending real letters and I like using "real" telephones, connecting with people this way is glorious. So certain things like technology are fantastic. And, as you pointed out, we're no longer smoking in McDonald's -- that's better.

But in other areas things aren't as great. We're not as nice to each other. Some of that is how we're raising new generations, some of that is splintering and dissolving of once shared beliefs and some of that is that societies and people change.

But you asked why. There are truckloads of reasons. Among them I think are, somewhat in reverse order, social media, the internet disconnecting us, lives getting busier, the ever-increasing globalization of economies and manufacturing, outsourcing, the dramatic shift in the 90s towards a singular focus on profits. Add to that decreased community involvement, civics classes being removed from schools, clubs and other activities becoming for-profit or costing dramatically more and you have a recipe for dramatic change, not always for the better.

There are some things that were better, somethings that were worse, it isn't black and white.

I live very rural, no real internet here, it sucks... so people are old school, they visit in person, very friendly.

I think social media made people less friendly in person, created more trolls. Let people be themselves and not polite anymore, or even if they were polite, they now just be trolls for fun to mess with others.

Older cars I say were far better, more power, stick shifts for better driving and easier to fix. Newer cars are way more expensive and more expensive to fix.

Yet there are a lot of good things today too, that were not around back then. Medical science has evolved to be far better. Better (believe it or not) are more accepting of others. My dad talks about how gay kids were beaten up for being gay... and no one cared, cause it was their own fault for being that way.

People are far more accepting of others, even if it doesn't seem like it. That is no longer considered a good thing that is their own fault for doing it. Violence against women was often ignored in the old days. Even watching a documentary on that right now, under age girls reporting they were raped to the police and the police said, not our problem and wouldn't even take statements in the 70's and 80's.

Morals are far worse now. Smoking indoors can't legitimately be compared to something more modern like sexualizing kids in trans events and in schools, or allowing illegals in with fentanyl that has recently killed over 100,000 Americans, or knowingly trying th o force people to take a dangerous experimental "vaccine" that has harmed over 1,500,000 and killed over 33,000 including over 100 kids aged 5 to 17 in the USA according to VAERS. Plus all the open racism against Whites and Asians in the USA. In addition to that, there is an average of over 640,000 abortions in the USA each year (only just over 300 were from rape pregnancies for the liars that try to claim that most are from rape.)

So yeah, morals today are FAR worse than just 20 years ago. I've lived through the times and have seen it myself.

Though back in the day not everything went right or wrong it´s the same today. Yes we have more freedom but society also lost structure and also some common sense. I can see where you´re coming from but I think it´s a statement that´s only partially true since it´s one sided and depends on what you determine as good or bad.

The problem I see in many modernity is that individualism trumps not only morals but values in general. That could lead to a point where any values society is built are questionable with dangerous results.

At the same time freedom gives more people to have success in life and live a happy life. It allows them to discover their strength and value for society.

The moral leaders turned out to mostly be in it for the money. Churches prioritized maximum attendance for donations. This was fo8nd to be best accomplished by telling people what they wanted to hear instead of what they needed to hear: a narrative of "we are righteous victims" inspired the most loyalty so the moral authority was taken over by people who just wanted moral authority without any concern over whether or not they earned it. The church selling out to Reaganomics was probably about where it started, as it may have started dawning on people that it's all a bunch of smoke and mirrors and we really are all alone. We can try to improve the world at cost to ourselves but no one appreciates it and with so many super rich forces trying for the opposite direction, it's even a little bit futile. The temptation to join in is thus too great for too many people.

By the 1970's, we had the pill, easy divorce, starting to see women in the workplace, and feminism. Add to that government benefits helping replace men in the home.

Social morals have decayed over time along with the decay of many families and it propagates over generations with many kids raised now in single parent environments.

I think we would we would be a better place & balanced and we would mostly focus ON OUR OWN citizens living in the US. I don't recall the political division so strong, the relationship and identity confusion did not exist.. or was kept very quiet. Things were made to last longer... now it's made to be disposable. We use more plastic and disposable now, I see more trash on the streets than ever.

I think it started with no one keeps score, everyone wins a trophy.
And it went downhill from there.
Eventually there weren't any repercussions for doing anything bad, just a time out and off you went. We seemed to have become a blameless society. Wasn't my fault, I had an unhappy childhood or whatever lame excuse they could think of. So now look at the mess that has created.

Things really were better. There was less emphasis on material things. Today it costs money to do anything. I never as a a very religious person but today there are fewer people that attend church. I think people are less invested in their communities. I have lived in the same neighborhood for over 20 years and I don't know half of my neighbors.

As kids we are blissfully unaware of the outside world as a whole. We are preoccupied with being a kid and don't truly grasp the ugliness that exists around us. When we look back it's in fondness for our youth and we have that same distorted reality. Human nature has been the same for thousands of years, nothing has changed.

It’s complicated. Depends on what context you mean. As far as economic opportunities, then yeah prolly easier back then. culturally/socially? Nah. Morally? Definitely nah.

I do feel like we treat others better on an individual level than we use to at least. But our systems of government seems pretty shitty still. Just speculation for me.

before the Covid pandemic everything and everyone had for the majority good intentions along with morals and ethics but once the shelter in place started people had too much free time on their hands and believed everything they read on the internet causing a mental health crisis and laziness when it came time to report back to work and so on

I think the view of 1983 and what I've seen in the past 20+ years has drastically changed. Service with a smile became you ready? Malls became Walmart and Amazon, which could be an impact. With that I continue to see similar morals with the people I work with.
