Why are so many people these days clearly suffering from paranoia?

It seems to be a way of life for many, especially in the English-speaking world. They seem to think that "The Government" (which one exactly?) is interested in ordinary schmucks like us, and for reasons that never make much sense when asked why. The simple truth is we don't even register as a tiny blip on their radarscopes, and the vast majority of privacy breaches and acts of surveillance are carried out not by governments but by private companies, so maybe they're the ones we should be concerned about.  I don't believe that anyone is out to get me; I'm just not that important. I can't be blackmailed because I have no saucy secrets to keep, I don't use Facebook, Twitter or any other social media sites, don't have a smartphone, have always and will continue to use cash, and never use Glonass, Galileo or GPS (I use this rather quaint device instead that is called a "map" - it's made out of paper of all things). I've never made use of online banking, because I know how risky that is, and I've just never needed to, and I buy things from actual, physical shops, not 'Amazon'. The computer that I'm using now to type this out is an old desktop that doesn't even have a camera (or WiFi) that can be hacked. For internet access I use a pre-paid USB stick that I can remove any time I want to, and then my computer becomes impervious to all attempts to gain access to it. I basically live in the 1980's! :D

Because people are building themselves echo chambers and spending a large amount of their life in them. The same is also the main source of political and social tension that is constantly rising on all sides. The ability for us to build our own echo chamber was always an issue. But was technology progressed people become susceptible to building their own without knowing it. Even with that social media and it's addictive properties very much made it easier for people to build an echo camber.

It's also been proven that social media can alter a persons physiology negatively. Leading to negative and harmful effects on a persons physiology and world view as well. So it's to say that if you have a mentally and emotionally well adjusted person access to social media and time to use it, they can become addicted to it and have their mental and emotional health greatly negatively impacted.

Also the reason why we are seeing such a negative impact on collage age people and even children of this generation is because they simply grew up or are growing up on social media. There are also studies showing this as well.

The world is large and complicated, and for many people, especially if they have low intelligence, the idea of a world controlled by dark forces is more appealing than a world of random chaos where they just happen to wind up near the bottom.

This is a useful delusion by those who want to direct that frustration and hatred against particular groups. (Not the actual powerful, but groups.)

It's a meme that takes hold because it's satisfying, and makes the believer feel that he is part of a secret group of his own, "those in the know", those who know the secret truth that the majority do not. It makes them feel clever, and for people who have never been treated as if they were clever, that's an appealing feeling too.

So yeah - you know those (stupid mexicans/stupid Africans/stupid Asians or generically stupid immigrants) or whoever? They are taking your jobs. But since they are too stupid to run the world, this influx of immigrants is really being controlled by (the jews/communists/democrats/george soros). And if that's not convincing enough, it's a cabal of evil psychologists (claim parts of scientology) or it's shape shifting inter-dimensional reptilians (say the fans of David Icke) or it's the Luciferians (says Alex Jones of Infowars) or the Deep State of blood drinking pedophiles headed by the Clintons (say the Trumpets). I think there’s a lot of silly populist politics these days, trying to win votes by telling average everyday people that the “elite” are the reason the common man and woman are struggling. Then with the internet, there’s always going to be someone with a platform, and there are strange people who seem to spend their entire day crafting these conspiracy theories, so the “information” people get seems elaborate and thusly more legitimate. Plus, I think people have some fascination with the idea that something sinister is going on and that they’re one of the few people “in the know”, and they think they’re the star of their own political thriller novel, lmfao.

A little bit of skepticism is healthy at times. However, there are some examples of taking this to a "crazy" level that can be found in almost all areas. I won't say openly what I am talking about. There is one event that happened where people still blame things on politicians and even make claims that don't line up with facts. As an engineer, I was taught if presented with a problem that seems to have several solutions to use   to find the best solution. To this day it has never failed me. The issue I was just speaking about? I spoke to a structural engineer that has extensive training in the mechanics of heat flow that showed me in plain English that every one of those people was/are full of shit!
