Why do people say respect starts with yourself giving respect to others but what do you do when the person receiving it doesn't give it to you back?

People always give advice that you show respect by you giving it but what do you do when the person receiving your respect refuses to reciprocate and continues to be disrespectful to you, why should you continue to take their disrespect and give them the same level of disrespect.

The golden rule is "do unto others as you'd have them do unto you"; the corollary is "treat people the way they treat you".

If you treat strangers well, they'll likely treat you the same way. If they don't, that's obviously the way they want to be treated. Have at it!
