How much is a man worth?

Question

My husband and I maxed out his life insurance policy, but no amount it gets up to makes me feel like it would ever be worth what he's worth...

If he were a stranger or if we didn't love each other I might feel differently. On paper he's probably worth $5-10 million.

No amount of money would console me if my son died. Since he's a student, he likely would be valued low by someone else.

Wrongful death lawsuits also have to put a dollar amount on what a person's life was worth to compensate the family.

Plus, I can't tell you how many true crime documentaries involved people killing for life insurance policies!

Clearly, some people can place a dollar amount on lives.

Do you feel like there's a dollar amount that men are worth?

How would you value yourself as a man or other men?

How would you value your male family, friends, partners, or even the worst men you know?

I don't even know where to start with this question. I feel like I could say nothing or everything, they're both true but also not. As for an actual dollar amount, I just don't think money has an equivalent to life. Money is a store of value, you can't eat it, it doesn't do anything other than provide a means for you to get things that do stuff (like a car, house, food, a pair of socks).

And sure, you can put a value on a pair of socks. But on a man? Unless you think slavery is valid, a man cannot have a monetary value. What are you asking? If you gave me $5 or $5 trillion dollars, you want to know if you can own me or another? You can't. Well, actually, you probably can, but I don't know what a human goes for in trafficking, it probably depends on the person and ranges from maybe $5K to $1M? No idea. Humans are over 8 billion on the planet, they are pretty much a dime a dozen and nothing special other than the value we feel for them individually as individuals.

The value a person has in my life? Take any man in my life from my dad, brother, to a coworker I hardly know, I still can't really sell him to you for any amount. He's not mine to sell, and I'm not going to pay a penny to keep him. If he's in my life or not is not up to me. If you are holding someone hostage and asking what I will pay in ransom, it again depends on the person and situation. I'd probably just call in a professional negotiator and let them handle it.

This question is comparing apples and oranges. It's like asking "how many hugs does it take to fill a bathtub?"

Legally, in a wrongful death, a person's worth is what they would have earned had they lived to the typical death age.

It's a complicated formula, taking what the man earns in a typical year now, and inflate that until age 78, which is the death date in most male mortuary tables. For someone in their 30s, that number usually calculates to several million dollars.

Life insurance is another matter. It has nothing to do with what the man is worth. Rather, the correct amount of life insurance is the amount that the man's beneficiary can live on at about the same level of living. For most people, that's less than a million dollars.

Depends on who you ask.

Most of the pieces I took off the board were worth a few cents to me. I'm sure they were worth tons to their families/cells/movement. To the actuary it's merely a matter of the number on the chart on the proper x/y coordinate.

I agree with you that your life insurance is worth far less than your loved ones, but you love your loved ones... haha... I mean... that's why we call them that. Some people insure their family members (who may not be loved ones) so they can kill them and get the money, sure. Even to them though... the person isn't worth what they're getting paid, they're getting paid based on what they could afford or how much they think they could buy and not seem suspicious.

nice to see you feel that way but even MODERN news companies emphasize the "women and children" in any war zone, ignoring a 6 year old can pull pin and throw grenade, or lady hide grenade while holding hat like the drama about vietnam... they might be soldiers... but still emphasized more, in fact no mention of the disposable men! same as ancient custom for life boats dramatized by film titanic. so a guy grabd a kid, lied my kid, to get in.

your mention of court money is for earning potential not replace the dead relative.

It's impossible to put a financial value on a life.

Am I worth less now than before I lost my leg? I'm actually healthier now, but I no longer qualify for life insurance unless I'm fortunate enough to be given a job that has a mandatory policy as part of the package - in which case why wouldn't the underwriter cover me before I worked for the company?

I think of the options you listed, the best you could possibly hope for is $1 million. No insurance company is going to agree to pay you $100 million or $1 billion for a single covered life.
