Do you think models should be naturally beautiful?

I do, I mean, they are being photographed for their outstanding 'beauty.' So shouldn't that mean that they are actually naturally attractive?

I'm not saying any of these women are ugly, by the way, except maybe Tyra Banks.But they are not beautiful, not in my opinion, anyway.

So why do people always drone on about how amazingly gorgeous celebrities are when they don't look anything like they do on camera.I mean, we are meant to be admiring them for true, real beauty, instead we are given photoshopped pictures of 'gorgeous' models, covered in makeup and hair extensions.That's not real beauty, so why do people go so crazy for these 'goddesses' when really, we are admiring the work of a makeup artist, a stylist, a hairdresser and top quality photographers.This is manufactured kind of beauty, it isn't real, and I'm not buying it.

I have a whole family who associates to fashion somehow, so I will tell you a few things people generally don't realize.

For starters, Tyra banks is not considered a very good model, she is just the most commercial well known one because of how she has marketed herself. Naomi Campbell herself is more successful than Tyra in terms of modelling career (not celebrity).

The thing is, modeling agencies don't look for 'pretty faces' anymore.

If you google the recent collections of Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Prada, McQueen... You will see several average faces. Most of these models will be FLAT chested and ridiculously underweight, so much so that they look ugly by society's standards.

But that's not what the industry looks for. You know what? They never feature women with big breasts (unless for a condom or underwear etc), because 'beautiful' women distract the viewer from the dress or the marketed product towards their personal features. You will rarely see a nice looking cleavage on the runway. Because people are bound to look directly at her curves or pretty hair or amazing eyes, everything other than the sole focus, the product itself.

A successful model is not one who looks the prettiest, it's one who sells a product most efficiently. If they wan't to charm a buyer by using a face that stimulates awe, they will cast celebs like Nicole Kidman or Megan Fox instead. Plus, these women know how to walk, pose and present themselves wonderfully.

The most efficient fashion houses and designers don't want exclusive looking exotic faces, they want women who represent an average woman, a confident, satisfied and modern woman. Because their luxury goods are targeted for the same people. For cosmetic and soap and shampoos kinda stuff, you will rarely see these models, but beautiful pretty looking girls.

So basically there are models for every industry. Fashion houses yield great profits on the runway, and runway models are the most successful. These models may not be the gorgeous girl next door (and that's what they DON'T want them to look like either), but they sure know how to work it on the runway. Plus, most leading designers these days want fresh representative faces, not one in a million face.

Beautiful pretty models will always be seen in pret collections, and beauty products (especially cosmetics). These are usually the more commercial models. Ones like Kate Moss are exclusive, they are WAY more than just a beautiful face. So hence, there are models of various kinds, its these who get the most attention because what they work for gets the most attention (couture and runway).

And actually I've been thinking about it as well.

I'll admit - I really like when girls wear a lot of make-up, but if it's not just an enhancement but actually a replacer of real beauty - it's a done deal.

Also not any pretty girl wants to be a model.

But maybe it's better that genuinely pretty women are down on the real world and corporate high fashion use only artificial beauty.

As anything what is touched by corporate business turns to rot, no matter how graceful it used to be.

And who admires those celebrities anyway? Those links you posted and anything similar is already known by people.

Yes, maybe so, but a lot of people are in denial.When I make a comment about a celebrity or model not being attractive at all without makeup, some guys will say things like, ''How can you say that?They must be attractive because their modelling,'' or, ''What do you know, look in the mirror.'' I don't understand why people must turn it round on someone else for pointing out the obvious.No one is perfect, no matter what the media tries to portray.

I don't really, well I suppose I do a little or I wouldn't of asked the question.I care because there are naturally pretty women everywhere who get overlooked for the artificial kind of beauty.I mean, which celebrities are considered the 'sexiest in the world?' Megan Fox, Rosie-Huntington whatever her name, Katy Perry, etc, all of which don't look so great without makeup.Yet Emma Watson, Keira Knightley and Natalie Portman, who are all naturally pretty, are overlooked.

When I look in a fashion magazine I don't expect to see realistic looking natural beauty I expect to see over the top make up, shoes, clothes, poses, lighting and very well done photo shopping, I really think people's expectations around fashion mainly high fashion need to change. The purpose for runway shows is to gain publicity to help with sales so of course they will manufacture the look that most women wish they had because it helps them move more product. I don't give a sh*t about what models look like with no make up because that's not their job, their job is not to look natural and be realistic their job is to look amazing, wear designer clothes and sell them to millions of women worldwide. People always seem to forget it is an industry that wants to sell you stuff to make money so they don't care about you or what you think of them because obviously they are making millions out of manufactured "beauty".

I think they're all fairly good looking, except Tyra but I've noticed about models is that they all usually have good facial structure. they all have nice cheekbones and lips or something like that. Like, either all their features are perfectly in proportion (ie no big nose) or they have one feature that 'pops' and makes them unique (a gap tooth or big lips). For example, I'd say this girl is average, but doesn't have model potential because she doesn't have great facial features link \9she has a bit of a big nose) ,while this girl link definitely has model potential because her features come together much more nicely than girl 1.

Either way, I think all the women you posted (not tyra though) are quite good looking either way, and some of the shots (ie Adriana Lima) that you posted were just at unflattering angles and they actually look really great without makeup link

I guess we have to agree to disagree on that one then, I think the girl you posted is average with makeup, and Adriana is prettier with no makeup than she is with makeup!

Well then that shows we have completely different ideas of beauty :) I have to disagree with you, Kaya is the most stunning model I've ever seen, in my opinion.

Well I'm going anonymous as my job is modelling. I think I'm far from a 'natural beauty'. When I went for a job, I went in my interview with no make up what do ever on, the woman made a comment about how I did the right thing as many girls come in plastered on make up and fake tan and that's not what she wants to see...she wanted to "see the canvas" the bare basics so she can see what " she can work with" ...I always assumed that she ment she ratcheted natural beauty but now your question is making me question whether she ment what she could do to make the girls look better!

I think it all depends on who employs them, some company's want plain and thin girls, some don't. Being a model doesn't normally mean your a natural beauty...it just means you have the correct (most wanted) facial/bone structure and body shape/measurements.

I feel that models are admired and fawned over because when they look their absolute best, they are extremely beautiful and look better than most people when they look their best. If they weren't the best looking then why would they get chosen ahead of millions of others around the world?

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and fortunately for these women that eye belongs to the majority of people. Also scientists have been able to identify what it is that makes someone physically appealing and you would find that many of the best models have the criteria.

Yes, they do look amazing when they are all done up, but most people are smart enough to know that what their seeing is not the model's true appearance, yet people still admire them for their 'beauty.' I see beautiful women everyday, and they don't have to trowel on makeup to look that way.

I've always wondered the same thing. I don't think many models are pretty with or with out makeup, but I think it's Hollywood just trying to make everyone seem perfect when in reality no one is.

Modelling and hollywood are two fairly separate industries, though there is a tiny bit of crossover among 'celebrities'.
