What do you do when your INTERNET is DOWN?

This morning, our Internet provider sent us an email that there would be some disruptions during the day, as they were doing maintenance in the area. Well, it went down at 1030am and wasn't back up until 530pm, that's 7 straight hours of no Internet.

I work from home, and I didn't have much work planned for today, but there was no way I could do any work. We couldn't watch TV because we use streaming services. So, I spent most of the day sorting and labeling a couple thousand pictures from our recent family gatherings and travels.

So, here's the Big Question...

When your Internet goes down for an extended period of time, what do you do?

I don’t anything I want… It’s not challenging to find something to do. I play piano and have one at home. I can go run on the treadmill or lift some weights. I have several thousand movies and TV series on network attached storage for my HTPC. I have thousands of e-books stores on HDDs that I can read. I have thousands of albums of music to listen to. I have over 1000 video games on steam, but typically have at least 200 installed at any time that can be played offline. I have two dogs that I can play with. I have a large food forest that sprawls multiple acres which I am always somewhat behind in doing basic maintenance, harvesting food and saving seeds, taking cuttings to propagate plants, canning/dehydrating food, etc. I always have random plant cuttings around that need to be potted up. I have maintenance and construction projects around the farm. I can go mountain biking at some great local trails and hit the dirt jumps. I can go to the beach anytime I want. I can go fishing. I can draw something in my black book. I can go shoot some targets. I can pick up one of my random experiments and work on it that are in different stages sitting in random places around my house everything from mushroom cultures to that solar water pump sitting over there on my desk. I should really do something with that… Clean up I suppose, that couldn’t hurt. Auto maintenance/wash car. You’re making me tired just thinking about it. That’s what the internet is for… Procrastination...

Text my boss that I'm out of commission for a time and transfer from my house to my office. If it's not work time, first console my children that, no, the world is not ending and this is not the apocalypse and there are in fact things to do without the internet. So, we might build Lego. Play a game. Do household projects. Library. Swim. Nap. Bake. Read. My son grabs the basketball and trudges to his friends' houses to collect them.

My internet hardly ever goes out. I live in cities and these services are essential and never down for more than half an hour. But I have internet TV, internet, and phone, so when it's out, yeah, kinda sucks. But in that case...

I would actually tether my internet to my phone unlimited data plan. Then I'm back online. Or...

• Chores around the house, like laundry, vacuuming, cleaning up, etc.
• Cook something more elaborate or thought out, starting dinner hours in advance, maybe.
• Go for a walk/exercise.
• Go out and do errands.
• Read a book.

I organize my folders and look at all the shit I've saved, or read a bo, do a hobby, listen to music, play guitar, take a walk, write short fiction or you can go to public places and leech their wifi lol

Since you work from home I would call the Internet/Cable provider and request for a 7-hour credit on your account if they refuse then simply tell them you will call the FCC and resolve things with them, trust me I've come across these issues and the FCC does help. Tell them you rely on your Internet for your income and doing work online if they refuse then tell them you are contacting the FCC, trust me they would rather solve matters then to get in trouble with the FCC. Always give the Internet provider the chance to solve matters, if not then take matters into your hands.

which is kind of ironic, I used to avoid working mostly from my office, especially a HOME OFFICE, and nowadays is what I am very used to, lol... not sure what happened to me, lol...

My internet was spotty throughout December due to my providers updates. Now that i dont have the job, the internet is doing good. ain't that some shit lol. But when the internet is down, i can't work but I can still play around on my phone, blast my music on the xbox, etc

I do the things that people used to do before there was an internet. You know, in the olden days (the 20th century). Things like leaving the house through the front door and being exposed to the sun. Hopping in the car and going for a drive to see what's in the next town. Shopping. Keeping the cat company. Reading a book (remember those?).

I try to keep my shit together. Call internet company, say "WTF, yo?" aaand they give me an answer and I just need to wait. I've learned I don't need the internet. I need power to do my work/art and stuff and If I need internet, i'll go find a infinite wifi source and leave it at that.

But if it's 3 days and STILL NO INTERNET :)... i'm gonna bust a cap in someone's arse if this doesn't get fixed...

I go find something else to do... retired, so no problem. if I worked from home, I'd go to coffee shop

reality is, we have phones so we can still fiddle with those.

If phone goes down and internet, we'll... that's the end of the world...

But I even read books online, I ve been reading many novels for many months and even today. I keep finding great novels, so its hard to stop reading them.

There are a lot of me to do with the internet down.

If I want to watch movies there are cd and dvd that I used to watch when I had no internet.
Without internet i would sleep more. Do indoors and outdoor activities.

I m not obsessed with internet, so I can live without it just fine.

If I was your boss I'd tell you to get off your ass and get into the office for work! The office is open, lights are on and your desk is waiting. Pretty sure they can find something for you to do until that one thin cable that your life seems to be revolving around. Might even have to pick up a phone and talk to someone!

Well, if whatever I was doing was important, I just switch my hot-spot to my phone and carry on, since i have unlimited data. However if I was just chatting, or surfing blindly, I will usually read a book, if it’s late at night, or just go out and spend some time with my friends. That is way more rewarding than sitting alone and chatting with strangers.

I stay nice and cozy by the fire with a good movie or a good book. Reason being is that I'm somewhat of a prepper/survivalist so I download movies and books onto my hard drive with Prime Video/Kindle in case of outages. Also I have a solar-powered generator, and firewood, if the power goes out. My little Chromebook can stay charged 24 hours and only consumes 20 watts to recharge it.

I have to make a change to my cable system either go with direct streaming or go to DIRECTV. What’s the difference? Also, how do you hook it up to a TV that you bought in 2002? The streaming system because I have to hook it up by myself. At least I can cancel anytime without being penalized instead of signing up for two year contract.

I just don't use the internet, plenty of other stuff to do.

There's quite a few places here along the coast where you can't get a phone signal. Much amusement can be had watching tourists have a melt down.

Internet? Please. I live in South Africa. The government can't even keep electricity running 24/7. Most days the power's off 4-6 hours.

If my biggest concern was inconsistent access to the web I'd be delighted.

I do go camping 3-4 times a year, no electricity, no internet , just living in the woods in a cabin or a tent without any technology and it's very relaxing. So! I would chop some wood, clean the storehouse (that will take 3 days work at least) 🤣, fishing, drinking, cooking, read a book ( i am reading Annihilation by Jeff VanderMeer ). I wouldn't have difficulties if it was for very few days, but not longer, it's different times and internet is a must for me now days.

Throw a party and enjoy the time with friends being able to talk again without someone constantly checking their phone. I´d love that to happen for a longer period of time.

I actually have been turning it off as much as I can. I go out whenever I can--and I also read! There's something called a book that can bring you joy and entertainment.

I usually make sure that I have at least a few games installed that doesn't require an internet connection. Or at least something that I can do, that doesn't require an internet connection.
