One night I can remember waking up in the median strip in one especially exhausting trip.27 Reply- +1 y
When I still lived it I'll ask you my girlfriend and I were coming back from a camping trip in the long stretcher road bordered by cliffs on one side water on the other I was really tired couldn't keep my eyes open so I told her I was going to pull over and take a short nap I pulled completely out there and turn the car off leave the seat back took me about a while ago 1.3 seconds to fall asleep. I woke up the sound of tires on the highway I guess I don't know I discovered that somehow I started the car pulled back on the highway and was now barreling down the road towards Anchorage in the middle of the night with no headlights on don't remember doing it at all that was the scariest one I ever had

I've done a lot of long distance driving, like 800-1000 miles in a day. I really hate when I must get drive distances over about 400-500 miles to get somewhere on time. Sometimes you just can't do it. I can usually count of making it 400-500 miles but more than that can sometimes be a struggle.11 Reply
+1 yA good nights rest, is what I always start with.
The next part is, if I see something that looks cool... I stop and check it out. Rather than driving straight through from point A to point B, I make the journey the best part of the trip, rather than the destination.
Yeah my trips can zig zag a lot based on what I pick up at tourist information centers, various signs saying this or that, to detour and look at stuff.
Driving straight though is not fun at all.12 Reply- +1 y
Like this one time, going through Colorado, detoured and took a gold mine tour, that was awesome. Got in this little cage that holds four people and went down a thousand feet under ground and got to see how they mine for gold.
Detours keep things entertaining, I think.
All for starting a good b****** always keeps me away I'm the one I wouldn't want anything doing it by falling asleep , drugs throwing windows down if it's a cold night looking at your window at the rearview mirror and saying wow where's that cop come from
I'm kidding but it is a serious problem I was driving into Phoenix after a long ride on my motorcycle nice I fell asleep on it there's a truck driver behind me is it realize what was going on to start blowing his horn and I woke up just before I ran off the road I wasn't drinking I wasn't on drugs just been a long long long trip10 Reply

Singing! Before any road trip, you must create the perfect playlist so you can sing along while driving. Or if you're not into that kind of thing, you can throw on a podcast. There are some pretty funny ones out there like "Zane and Heath Unfiltered" for example.

+1 yPlay road-trip games. They're not just for kids. You can play I SPY and the LICENSE PLATE game (see how many states or countries you can see). You can play these alone or with your passengers. You can also sing songs, with or without the radio.
You can also lower the temperature in your vehicle by keeping the A/C on low or rolling the windows down (in winter).11 Reply- +1 y
When you get tired, it's best to pull over and rest. One time, I was doing a 15-hour drive from Georgia to New York State. It was about 2am when I entered New York State and still had about 2 hours to go. I was really tired so I pulled into a service area on I-90, parked the car, and decided I'd take a 15-minute nap. 3 hours later, I woke up and finished the drive.
It's not a good time, but it works, very well.
Ice in your pants.
Really you want ice on your genitalia, it's not a good time, but you're awake.
And also your seat is wet.11 Reply
+1 yCaffeine, cold water, occasional breaks, food with lots of nutrients, music that you can sing along to or that is upbeat, and having someone to talk to so you are engaged in a conversation.

That’s my not-so-secret tip lol! I found that drinking cold water hydrates me and helps me focus, also, splashing/dabbing cold water on my face helps a lot too. That’s definitely a known trick to wake people up. Cold water, having a convo, and upbeat/sing along music were the top 3 effective ways to keep me awake during long car rides!!

Definitely talk to them so they can stay awake and you as a passenger can know they are awake. Schedule something like a half hour nap on the trip where you say pull over for lunch and just let the driver eat than nap for a bit for long haul drives. Limit the time for each driver in the car to 2-4 hours at a time, then rotate. Engage in a karaoke car dance party to keep them alert and moving.
00 Reply810 opinions shared on Travel topic. Getting enough sleep. Playing music. If you feel drowsy, get off the road, recline the seat, and close your eyes for a bit. Even 15 minutes can make a big difference. Do not drive drowsy. Better to be late than dead.
20 ReplyStop and get out and walk around do some jumping Jacks or something get some fresh air, sing out loud, do something stupid and get pulled over as soon as you see those lights you'll be awake, a lot of times it's just your eyes that are tired to much stain so clean your windshield
But the best thing is stop and get some rest whether in a hotel or a nap in the car will help the most10 Reply

12 Reply- +1 y
It helps with alertness without the jitters and crash associated with stimulants. I’m not sensitive to caffeine, so i start with that and then use peppermint to mitigate the caffeine crash. Works for me! Natural peppermint works best, otherwise you risk a sugar crash.
Even truckers pull over when they're too tired to drive. Don't threaten your life or others because you're too tired to drive. I fell asleep driving only once in my life and it was such a wake up call that it hasn't happened since. Scared the hell out of me and I'm lucky I didn't hurt myself or others. My car ended up on a stone wall and I had no idea how it got there.
So yeah, always be aware of how awake and alert you are. It isn't worth risking lives over.01 ReplyA tip that runs in my family is to snack on sunflower seeds. The act of opening each one with your teeth, discarding the shell and eating the seed repeatedly apparently keeps you awake and attentive.
