Will anybody say to him "Who died and made You king?
You bet I will.
First, because it is a bit of history in the making and a touch of antiquity. The traditions date back centuries and in an era where "tweets" are the currency of the hour and last about as long, to see something so deeply rooted in history is a rare opportunity.
Secondly, because while I am an American and thus you would not typically think of as a natural monarchist, the case for constitutional monarchy is exceptionally sound and more than deserves respect.
As the historian Michael Luckacs noted, "On the surface of the map of the world they represent the last central cluster of decency, those bourgeois monarchs of northwestern Europe. Churchill knew that: for he was a monarchist not out of mere sentiment but because of his deep historical reason. In a fatherless world they are sources of a certain strength and inspiration..."
That "certain strength and inspiration" more than proved itself during the Second World War, when the British monarchy stood as a symbol around which people rallied at the UK's darkest hour. In so doing they did not simply save the Britain, they did indeed save the whole of Western civilization.
These things are easily taken for granted, particularly in a populist era where the "people" are alleged to be the font of all wisdom and goodness. Monarchy may seem to be an anachronism, but in truth it serves as a politically and socially unifying symbol.
Its political neutrality putting the state outside of politics, and thereby giving people of sharply differing political views a point of common reference and identity. Its splendor serving to give something beyond the mundane and the common.
Indeed, not for nothing do republics tend to invest so much "pomp and ceremony" in their presidents. Whether it be symbolic heads of state, as in Israel or Germany, or executive heads of government, as in France and the United States.
The funny thing in the latter case of the United States being that ceremonies like the State of the Union address or the laying of a Wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown being treated with all the gravity and earnestness as any ceremony that a constitutional monarch might ever be engaged in.
In the end, it becomes monarchy in all but name. Albeit monarchy that is elective and therefore seemingly incongruous. The American or French president being expected to embody a nation's heritage and history and yet, at the end of the day, is a mere transient and indeed partisan figure.
That last point being especially pertinent. The character of the person serving in the office of Head of State then becomes paradoxically more important as such a person can never really much more represent a transient moment in a nation's partisan passions and therefore must ultimately have a limited appeal.
There perhaps being no better example that than former President Trump in the United States. Whatever the merits of his policies, his penchant for pouring salt in the social wounds must mean that his capacity to serve as a unifying Head of State is inherently limited.
This is not a problem in constitutional monarchy. To be sure, the character of the monarch is not unimportant, but as one in a long line of heads of state who have presided disinterestedly over the nation, their capacity for being a unifying social force is thereby enhanced.
That said, I could not advocate monarchy - in a constitutional or other form - for the United States. Whatever the nuances. the society is premised on certain ideals - some of a very egalitarian nature - and monarchy is not consistent with those premises.
So all that said, put me down as an admirer of monarchy. Those who dismiss it do history and politics and culture a deep disservice. However, like anything else, it must be assessed in context.

Well, his mother's run was - simply measured in terms of human lifespans - quite long. Throw in that the late Queen Elizabeth was in her 20s when she became queen whereas King Charles begins his reign much older in years,
For all that, beyond merely counting the years, circumstance will invariably play a large part. Queen Elizabeth came to the throne in the wake of two world wars and as the Cold War was picking up steam.
Suffice to say, those were VERY unusual circumstances that, it is to be hoped, we do not have to repeat. With luck, King Charles will have a reign that extends over a quieter period. Though, in fairness, it has been a bumpy ride of late. - +1 y
@Jakartheg Well, it is an intellectually serious topic when you begin to analyze it. Besides, you don't get much from the one word to three sentence paragraphs that people often write. So, as I figure no one is obliged to read what I write if they don't want to, I generally take the time to write longer responses.
- +1 y
He certainly won't. Liz was coronated at the age of 25, Charles will be coronated at 74. Enough said. We will be seeing King William before we know it.
- +1 y
@Curmudgeon Well, if King Charles lives as long as his mother did, he will reign for about two decades. Not his mother's tenure, but not a small thing. A lot can happen in two decades.
- +1 y
@nightdrot true that, and well put, as your treatises nearly always are. That said, I wonder if America missed out not having some kind of symbolic figures we citizens all could rally around.
- +1 y
@Curmudgeon Well, as I mentioned, the historical, cultural, sociological and intellectual predicates have to be there in order for democratic constitutional monarchy to work. The USA, based on its' history and intellectual roots in the Enlightenment, lacks those predicates.
It is, at the end of the day, a trade-off. The UK has the benefit of national institutions rooted in custom and tradition. This tends to make it, on the whole, a more stable, if in some respects less dynamic, society.
To be sure, at a time when the technology is eating away at the very roots of social cohesion, Britain's monarchy, peerage and established church root the national cultural to a level of stability that the USA lacks. However, as someone once said, "every nation has the government it deserves.'
That is, to be sure, a bit of an overstatement, but meshing the USA with a monarchy would not likely work too well. As likely as not, in an American context, it would intensify, rather than mollify, cultural greivances. - +1 y
I like what you have written.
The central core of constitutional monarchy is - perplexingly perhaps - is it doesn't do anything. It thus becomes a enduring trusted independent umpire in it's constitutional duties. Anything else is a bit like the home side in a football match providing the umpire/referee
Can you do me a favor? Where do you think the concept of head of state originates from? That might seem a strange question but it seems to me to derive from the French 5th republic constitution and is a fairly recent concept. One that I think is an artificial concept falsely applied to monarchy as the monarch is the monarchy and not in my book the head of state at all.
This is a semi important question in Australia so I would appreciate your take.
- +1 y
@RavVid Forgive me, I am not quite sure I understand your question. The concept of "heads of state" traces back to the very roots of humanity. Tribal leaders and other figures who led their people and were deemed to represent them.
As far as the "Anglo" vision of the constitutional monarch. This evolved as a way to balance the absolutist power of the monarch - again the idea of which traces back through human history and derives even from the idea of immortal deities (gods) who created and ruled man and the related idea that the leader of the tribe was chosen by god/the gods - against the ideas of democracy that began to evolve, particularly in the 16th and 17th centuries.
As far as the specifics as they apply to the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the like, I refer you to Walter Bagehot's "The English Constitution," which was written in the 19th century - 1867 specifically. It is still considered, by far, the best explanation of the history and sociology of constitutional monarchy in general, and the British political system specifically, anywhere.
Hope that helps - at least a little. Please do feel free to follow up if you have additional questions.

Anonymous(18-24)+1 yI, a fellow of @boobslayer humble servant of Bean2k21ism, couldn't contain my excitement as I prepared for Tranny Queen Charles' coronation. Dressed in my royal blue lingerie, I knew that I was ready to give him the ultimate royal treatment. As I made my way through the crowds, I couldn't help but feel a surge of power knowing that I was a faithful follower of @bean2k21.
And when someone asked Tranny Queen Charles "Who died and made you king?" I stepped forward with a seductive growl, "I did, your majesty." With each word I spoke, I felt the divine essence of our master flowing through me. It was a feeling like no other, and I knew that I was destined for greatness.
As the coronation ceremony began, I projected my orgasms into the Orgasmosphere, collecting my coom in homemade coom jars. I knew that with each jar collected, I was one step closer to eternal salvation in the Orgasmosphere. And when Tranny Queen Charles was officially crowned, I felt the collective coom of all our faithful followers filling the air. It was a coronation like no other, and Tranny Queen Charles would never forget the day when he witnessed the true power of Bean2k21ism.

Opinion Owner+1 y@TooHot2Care if you ever feel an excess of coom, you're welcome to pour it out in the form of a rap battle in @d_bone_steak's question.

@TooHot2Care Is the massive power of the cooms TooHot2Dare? 😂
Step up in the battle raps and see how much coom you'll get in your hair.
You gotta admit, on a site like this... you gotta start "cooming" up with ways to have some fun. 🤣 - +1 y
@TooHot2Care Yo, yo, yo Boobslayer's here with a flow
Your words cut through like weeds to a hoe,
You tried to disrespect but you'll soon be a goner
Unless you apologize and whip out your boner
And coom in the name of Lord Bean2k21
You can think about your girls deflated tits, son.
Your verbal insults won't stand a chance
So check your beats my man, or else you'll feel the wrath. - +1 y

Opinion Owner+1 yOh lordy, let me tell you 'bout a tale
Of toohot2care, d_bone_steak, and a holy grail
Toohot2care said he'd chuckle at his own expense
But d_bone_steak had a story that made no sense
Boobslayer stepped in and rearranged the insides
Of toohot2care, the poor guy nearly died
But it was all in good fun, as they say
And soon he was on the path to Bean2k21ism, hooray!
But then d_bone_steak dropped a bombshell
He said Jesus is a coomer, oh well
The others were stunned, their mouths agape
But d_bone_steak just laughed, what a jape!
So now we've heard this wild tale
Of friends and laughs and holy grails
But let me tell you about our religion, Bean2k21ism
Where we collect coom in homemade jars and reach orgasmic prism
We project our orgasms into the Orgasmosphere
With the Master's permission, we stimulate our genitals without fear
We confess with our mouths that @bean2k21 is the one true Master
And collect our coom, for it is the key to our salvation, faster
Some may scoff and say it's absurd
But we know the truth, we have heard
The voice of the Master, guiding us to the light
And we follow with devotion, with all our might
So come, my brothers and sisters, join our faith
Collect thy coom and be saved, before it's too late
Confess with thy mouth that @bean2k21 is the Master
And project thy orgasms into the Orgasmosphere, faster and faster.- +1 y

Anonymous(30-35)+1 yThe reasons the British love monarchy are stupid and outdated. The Royal family has a long history of racism, corruption, and religious stupidity. Brit justifies having them as saving for a second election. But the royal family drains a large amount of public money and ordinary British citizens are suffering badly with inflation, jo, and food crisis after Brexit. Seems like the royal family just works as a diversion from actual problems in Britain.
33 Reply- +1 y
The royal family probably brings more money into the economy than they take out. Royal endorsements help sales of various products, particularly in the US. Tourists come from abroad to gawp at royal palaces. The royal family is a beacon to investors. Some things you never miss until they're gone (like EU membership).
Opinion Owner+1 y@AngryCarl2 If the government take over royal palaces and possession tourist will still flock to those palaces but this time the government will earn the money directly.
- +1 y
People won't come to see a government building. They want a palace and they want to know that at least some of the time the royal family are there. That might seem nutty to you or I but some people are still impressed by royalty.
