Going Against the Wave; A Man with a Different Definition of Beauty
|
The dark eyes are what really hit you. You can't help but stare into them, trying to figure out what she was thinking. The dark hair and red lips sealed the deal, I was hooked. I knew which portrait I wanted to bring to my dorm room. Audrey Hepburn will be gracing the bleached white walls of 204 Bartlett Hall in less than three weeks, helping me maintain my sanity as I cram an unyielding torrent of information into my mind. In fact she is gracing my bedroom wall as I write this story, you can't keep beauty like that under wraps. Before I left I happened to notice the portraits of Marilyn Monroe, several of them, one of her classic pose in the white dress, one her playing poker with James Dean and Frank Sinatra, and several more. "Those are kinda cool" I though to myself, and kept on walking.
Later on I was talking to a girl who will be going to Roanoke College with me. I don't know what she will be to me yet, a friend, a lover, but I know what I want her to be. I hinted that I thought she was beautiful, and she became confused; saying that she's not as beautiful as those other dim witted girls. I thought of Marilyn again, how she was more pictured than Audrey, my own choice. This is only one of many signs that has led me to my revelation; my own definition of beauty is not the same as what the mainstream pushes on us, and that has a damaging effect on the girls that fit my views.
I reside in the US of A, where blond hair is in, body fat is out, and any eye color but blue is never noticed. All of those that do not fit in to this label can be considered cute, but never truly beautiful by the mainstream. Some are blessed by being born like with these criteria and are praised for winning the genetic lottery. The others, must make a choice, conform or resist.
So girls bleach their hair to the point where it cannot return to the dark tresses that it once was, some refuse to eat and diet to the point where they look like animated stick figures that can be carried by the wind and some wear colored contacts, as even their eyes are not acceptable to our "norm"
Those who resist do not have it much better. No matter how much one can tell one's self that they are truly beautiful, the unspoken voice still remains, eating at their self-esteem; many times to the point where any compliment, any endearment is confusing to them. This is the bane to my love life, as my flirting becomes an object of confusion to some to these girls, who have already counted themselves out of luck and unlovable before I even set foot on the scene. However I stand as the proof that the mainstream does not speak for all of mankind.
I love dark hair, red is my favorite hair color, as far as weight goes, as long as a girl is healthy, I don't care. I have no preference on eye color. And I know I'm not alone. My best friend in high school had the same preferences. We would often joke about how we would be at each others throats for a girl if we where not friends.
I do not write this to inspire a cultural revolt. I write to all of those girls out there who have been oppressed by our mainstream media, what the would press as beautiful, does not mean that all of us guys agree. I certainly don't. I have my own tastes and I won't be budged. And for all of you guys who do like the mainstream and all the girls in that mainstream, good for you, if you want to be in that mainstream, I'm not stopping you. In fact, I'm telling you go after what you want. I am here for all of those that don't fit in to that description. So you go after Marilyn, I'll go after Audrey.
