Maybe he's trying to be respectful. A lot of girls tend to say they're tired of being complimented only on their appearances and how they feel dehumanized by it. Guys can take that to heart. Sometimes so much so that they overcompensate and completely refuse to acknowledge a woman's attractiveness.
A lot of men just think it's more respectful to compliment girls on their personality rather than appearance. He probably talks about your looks with his friends. Don't worry but good luck with it :)
