I have been a health advocate all of my life. I am a semi-vegetarian (fish and fowl) and eat organic. I run, body build, swim and I am a Kung Fu Artist. I am very fit and people usually think I am in my forties. I say this to establish my credibility for giving you advice.
Experts say that an average person can safely lose about a pound a week. That number goes up a little if you are morbidly obese, defined as more than 100 lbs. overweight with most of the extra in adipose tissue. In that case, you might lose 2-3 pounds for the first few weeks.
Judging by your question, I suspect you are relatively normal in weight. You should probably plan on losing half of your goal by the deadline and the other half after. Then maintain your weight with a healthy lifestyle, rather than going on the diet roller coaster.

6 months? if you stay dedicated like you say you will, and put in the sweat and effort, you can make a huge noticeable difference, but remember its all about that diet. the main point is to NOT OVEREAT, over-indulging in 1 meal can screw you over for like 2-3 days of diet + working out, and you'll have to work harder to catch up to your normal pace again. enjoy the cheat meals, but stay within your calorie range and just keep at it.
The most you should lose is 2 pounds a week.
