Yeah I'll have to go with what the ladies here are saying. Pointing out something negative to someone else especially about physical things is really a tightrope walk. I also hope it's mostly for health reasons and that the best way to go ahead with this is to ask her to go workout with you or if you want to really have no papertrail work out alone for a bit and then roll that into something that you would like to do with her because you miss her during that time or something along those lines. Basically make it seem like it's "her" idea to go with you.
I do agree with you though that it's not necessarily a shallow thing, because putting time in yourself shows you care. Especially if you and/or her put more time into yourselves before getting together I can understand a desire for that to not change now that you're going out.
There is no easy answer lol, you'll just have to soften the blow, what I did was just say do you want to exercise with me?, you have a great body but would look even better!.
HONESTLY I THINK YOU SHOULD SAY MAN I GAINED A FEW POUNDS AND I HATE TO WORK OUT ALONE WILL YOU PLEASE DO IT WITH ME? THEN SUGGEST SEXERCISING AS WELL IT'LL MAKE HER FEEL LIKE SHE'S DOIN YOU THE FAVOR. OFFER IT OUT TO HER AS A WAY OF SPENDING TIME ALONE TO COMMUNICATE WHILE HAVING FUN? THATS WHAT I'D WANT MY HUBBY TO DO.
just get her to be more active in something, like swimming or running, if you can. if she's not into sports or activity then even if she did lose weight she'll probably gain it back so you should accept it.
and no, there is no positive way to say you are fat, lose some weight.

well I think the only reason why you should even ask your girlfriend to lose weight is because you are concerned about her health...if its just a vanity issue then that's kinda messed up...so if she has really gained a lot of weight and is risking her health you could try and talk to her and tell her your concerned...
ask her to work out with you or make it a couple thing to do together :) because she WILL be hurt if you tell her..
Ask her to workout with you because you think it will be an intersting bonding experience... ro try to encourage her to play a sport..
