What would you do if you were stuck in an eight year relationship?

My boyfriend of eight years has broken up and come back several times over the years.

My family hates him and don’t want me to marry him and at first I ignored this because I loved him but now the family pressure is adding up and I feel guilty. I also don’t know if I want to marry him. I don’t feel excited to spend my life with him.

Sometimes I remember our old memories fondly and think “will anyone ever love and care for me like he did?” And that causes me to hold on despite not wanting to. We have nothing in common and I hate talking to him on the phone for too long but I care about him and don’t want to lose him in my life altogether.

I’m scared he won’t want to remain friends if we break up and I won’t get the occasional check in to know he is okay and happy. I’m scared if I regret it in the future too as this is my only relationship and so I am inexperienced. I’ve been with him since I was 15.

Please help.

That’s not a great sign. in my opinion you need to break up. It’ll be hard but shying away from the hard parts of life will only make you miserable. You said it yourself that you’re not excited to spend your life with him and that your family doesn’t like him what more do you need? There’s a lot of people out there, you can have something better. First you need to separate with him and then focus or yourself as an individual. When your stable and happy on your own, you’ll be ready to find someone and something that can actually calm the waters of life and make you happy instead of putting you in a storm of uncertainty.

I'd end the relationship. You can find someone who you're excited about. Please don't be in a relationship where you're not excited.

The only way i’d date someone for 8 years is if we started at like age 12. From age 21+, i wouldn't date someone for more than 2 years without an engagement and no more than 1 more year before a marriage

Jesus.. I usually give relationships a month and see where it goes... 8 years and it's still not working? It's not going to be easy but you have to cut the chord
