Why do some people go for other people that are way out of their league?

So my boyfriend and I were out to eat today and it wasn't crowded so it was easy to hear other people's conversation. This one chubby guy with glasses, and a mullet who didn't have the best hygiene asked a thin/petite blonde girl with gorgeous long hair and really pretty face for her number. (the blonde girl was the waitress). She looked like a barbie. My boyfriend and I were surprised because we both thought why this dude asking this really gorgeous chick out when it was obvious to tell she was wayy out of his league. She declined and told him that she has a boyfriend.

The idea of every shot counts and you only truly failed if you never tried. Granted he could of taken a better approach and came in a better state before trying.
