Why is it so hard to tell if a girl is interested in me?

I'm 29 and I've been single my whole life. I've had hookups who were only connected through mutual friends throughout time but never have I had a girlfriend.

Why? Because girls never show me signs they are interested. I don't get the smile, look away, smile, I don't get the playing with there hair, etc.. I'm a pretty average guy so for the most part I always play it safe. Am I the reason that I'm single or do women in general just don't think much of me?

maybe you don't stand out in a crowd , in bars or parties its mainly the above average guys who stand out most of the time. i can't think of a lot of reasons why girls would notice you in those type of situations to be honest

do you go to the gym? or any thing like that , might need to work on yourself or something

Women are all about looks, physique and how you make them feel. If you're an average guy then you are practically invisible to them. Your best bet is to forget about chasing them, chase your purpose instead, become the man you were born to be and then let them chase and prove themselves. It will be more difficult for an average guy, but if you aren't on your purpose you might as well forget it period!
