Should I break up with my boyfriend? He makes degrading comments on my looks?

The first was when I was walking home with him. He mentioned he liked and preferred Italian and French girls with light eyes and pale skin (none of the above which I apply to). The second was when he sent me a text stating how he loves me and my personality although he does not consider my looks to be a model. He also does not hesitate to comment on the looks of his female friends as he speaks to me. It has been bugging me all week. My friends say I should dump him but I am not sure since he loves giving me gifts and is considerate to my feelings, maybe except for my looks.
