Why do people say "it's over for you" in dating once you reach a certain age?

I've never understood people, usually younger people, saying this to older people because it really isn't over until you're dead in the grave. Is this just the ignorance of youth that feels like the fairy tale exists for everyone where "of course you find the love of your life at 25 and settle down, and raise a family, and everything in life works out." Clearly with divorce rates as high as they are, that isn't the case. My great uncle just got re-married and he's in his 70s.

This applies mostly for women. Once you hit a certain age as a woman no matter how good looking you are is always going to be harder to find a partner. A lot of the women I work with are in their mid 30s and struggling to find a partner.

I've seen so many get married 30, 40,50+. Reality is, they know nothing.
