Why do people ship two people together to their face?

I'm female (ignore profile if it says I'm male, this is my brother's account lol), but I have a LOT of guy friends. And I love them all (AS FRIENDS), but people constantly ship me with them. I've probably been shipped with at least 20 different guys over the course of a year at this point. It gets really annoying, honestly, especially when we make it clear that we're just friends and they continue to do it. So I'm just wondering why people choose to announce their opinions on relationships they have no part of to our face? Why not just wait until we're not together and tell us in private that you think we look cute together? Then I could explain that we're not dating or have any interest in it instead of creating an awkward situation for the two of us?
