The work system is fucked, people ring in pretending to be sick all the time but the real reason why they won't go to work is probably because their over-worked, didn't sleep last night or would simply rather take the day off instead of earn a days wages because they want to do other things. The problem is you can't tell your boss the TRUTH about the real reason why you phoned in sick because those aren't 'valid' reasons and you risk losing your job. If you ring in claiming to be sick they legally have to give you the day (s) off until you're better, just keep in mind most companies have a limit on the amount of "sick days" available to each person per year (Most places about 20 of them) so use them wisely
Like I said the system is fucked, they'd rather you ring in pretending to be sick than showing up 30 minutes late because you needed more sleep XD

Good and honest answer. MHO !!!

Jesus fuck, I didn't even see where you say "Most places about 20 of them." And on top of that you say to use them wisely? Are you fucking kidding? Alright, so a real man with good benefits gets 7 paid sick days. Unless your Grandma or someone else died you don't use a single one. The thing with paid days off is you use them strategically so you don't get other coworkers sick, which is bullshit because taking one day off won't help in the least. Because like most respectable human beings you simply get right back to work when you are still in the neighborhood of 65% maybe even not that. The GREAT thing about a lazy ass motherfucker like you? You don't get them "20" days paid! You simply are that fucking lazy, you will do it unpaid. What a fucking piece of shit.

I've worked through being as sick as a dog more times than I can count even when I had 7 paid sick days in a calendar year. Only time I ever called in sick wasn't because I was sick, it was because there were some fun festivities going on that particular day. The only reason I ever did that was a boss once told me he didn't expect me to show one day. Why? He knew I was a huge baseball fan and he EXPECTED me to miss work just to get in line for MLB Playoff tickets. I told him, nope. I got a buddy already doing that.

I hated school as a kid so I would find ways to fake illnesses and I have tonsils so I would get tonsilitis a lot while growing up so I would fake having that and I would drink water on an empty stomach so I would throw up and pretend to be ill, I did a lot and I put a lot of thought and effort into it 🥴!.

Former army conscript here.
Have I faked being unwell to get out of fitness exams and training? Perhaps.
But most of the time when I have reported sick, there was a genuine issue. This was all in basic training by the way. I had fever once, was diagnosed with chronic lower back pain, Sprained my ankle (still had to wear boots to go home for my Medical Leave), and got an 84 day long excuse from physical activity as I was being investigated for possible heart issues (tests came back negative, thank goodness). All within the span of 4 months.
Vocational Training and my posted Unit treated me very well, so I had less reason to report illness haha. I did still get a 30 day excuse from physical activity, but after that, my heart tests all came back clear and I (reluctantly) went back to training.
All that said, I did enjoy my time as a medic in an EOD/IEDD team. Really fun. But screw basic.10 Reply- +1 y
I've never called in sick or took a day off from work in my life, besides earned vacation time. The basic structure to a job is showing up and on time every scheduled shift. Not doing that is being an awful employee to the company. No offense to the asker, but proudly saying you did that with a "cool" emoji is very immature. It isn't funny and jobs should be taken seriously.

When I was in elementary school, I used to just tell the teacher that I had a headache during the middle of class if I didn't feel like being at school.
The teacher would send me to the nurse's office. At the nurse's office, the nurse would ask if I wanted to go home and I would act like I really, really, desparately needed to.Therefore, I would be able to go home.

Never had to, I'd wake up feeling like I don't really want to go to school, I'd rather watch heat or pain and gain so I'd tell my mom that I'm not going today and that'd be it really, at work I've faked my grandparents death a few times, fortunately I'm still young so my work consists of me being a waiter and I end up changing places up quite frequently
10 Reply I was bullied at school. I took mental health breaks from time to time by faking physical illness because I could lock myself in a bathroom for half an hour and tell my parents I had diarrhea. It's not like they checked.

Twice at work when I needed time to find a new job due to shitty bosses. I never tried to pull the sick card at school because ALL cases of illness required a call home and parental approval before I could be let go. Instead I just skipped classes then got home before mom did and deleted the voicemails before she got home.

Yes. In my 20s working at Canadian Tire I used to give my shifts away all the time or just call in sick ever Weekend. The manager kept saying “call in one more time thats it!” I said “how about just don’t schedule me 8am weekends…have me start at 12?” So he did lol

How do you cope with it, whats the cause?
320 opinions shared on Education & Career topic. Only one day. My mom wouldn't let me stay home otherwise. Since I had gone to school near death before because she didn't beleive me, she was more apt to beleive me when I said I felt sick since I didn't really say it. There was an annoyingly long and difficult class paper I had to do. I needed an uninterruped time to work on it, which I couldn't do if I went to school. So I faked being sick, got to drink a lot of tea and could get what I needed to get done.
10 Reply- +1 y
Don't think so. If I didn't want to go to school I just didn't show up. For work I just take a mental health day
20 Reply Of course I have. But that was twice when the job was THAT BAD, idgaf. Like it was not even a small bit of "heh heh heh... this is nice." No. Just from as soon as I clock in, awful times.

I learned early on that if I wanted time off, all I had to do was go punch one of the bullies who was picking on someone.
It was a win win.20 Reply I never did, there was a time I was really such with a fever in winter and after much hesitation my mother still sent me to school after I took the medecine

Of course, especially in high school if I had math test upcoming and I didn't revise enough because our system was if you had let's say 4 Fs and 5 Ds, you passed the subject (if you had same number, you fail). So I once or twice faked fever and vomiting
11 Reply- +1 y
Then you get creative. Ain't gonna lie, I was B honor roll half the time and A honor roll the other half. Without even trying. I just saw my "job" as a High Schooler was to get good grades. Math was my worst subject. Algebra I was not liking it. I hate math and numbers. I would pilfer my teachers cabinet not only for the answer book, but the answer book that shows work (aka proof). I still had to face exams and tests. I failed 3 out 4 quarters. I would ask for extra help from my Mom, I would show up off hours with my teacher to really put an effort in to learn to the best of my ability. My teacher saw that is initiative. She offered me a way to get a passing grade in Algebra, she told me if I could pass the FINAL final exam I would pass the class. So, I got creative. We were given two days for the exam. I spent the entire time copying down every fucking question on the first day. I took the time to type it up on a computer and print it out as REVIEW. Went home and got help from my Mom, got all the correct answers. I then brought these answers to class. Cleverly, I took my half passed exam from the first day which was turned in the first day, and fulfilled my exam to a degree as to not warrant suspicion and passed. My teacher was so fucking excited for me, I was late to a class, and my math teacher from 50 yards away yelled at me! She said I passed!!! She was so stoked that I miraculously passed, yet she had no fucking clue I cheated!!!

Definitely. My college was far away from my home and I had to live there. The college authorities were very strict and never permitted us to take leaves without any reason. So, whenever I visited my hometown and didn't feel like returning, I faked illness. Nobody ever doubted me.

I lied about not having transportation to work due to losing my bus pass because I wanted to attend a party on a work day
22 Reply- +1 y
I showed up to work 20 minutes late because I couldn't afford a taxi and my managers were mad at ME over it, they gave me this 6am shift before the buses even operate, I had rent to pay the week before, they pay me every 2 weeks, instead of every week and it was 2 days before I was due to be paid again, the work system is fucked, would have been better off phoning in pretending to be sick :D

@Cats-and-video-games that’s tough, I know a guy who biked to work while saving up for a car
