Uncomfortable working retail. What should I do?

Anonymous

I’ve been working retail for the past year and it is my first job. I was struggling to get a job and I got approved for this job. I’m really shy, introvert and don’t like talking to people. And what’s worse is it getting a degree in the most social degree where you have to talk to people. A couple people at my job found out about my degree and they all gossip about it usually saying they don’t see me with that degree because I’m too quiet. My biggest fear is being laughed at.

I’ve had two embarrassing moments working retail and it really affected my time working there. I started off as a cashier and I was getting trained my first customers, a couple. The cashier next to me is training me while she’s with checking out another customer. Apparently the guy used to work there and was helping me a little while she was busy. There’s a part of the transaction where you have to ask for their number. So I asked for his number to put in the computer and he just says umm *makes a mean face* NO no thank you and is about to walk away and the cashier overhears him and chuckles while looking embarrassed.

Then a woman ask me where something was and I told her where whatever she was explaining may be. I go look for it for her and I tell her it’s somewhere on the shelf we were looking at. She gets mad and ask me to call someone who works in the department because she’s bought it before and it has to be somewhere. My coworker walks by and she ask him and he finds its right there in front of us. She thanks us and walks away. This customer next to us burst into laughter uncontrollably at me and tells me “don’t worry it’s going to be okay.” I’m just a part time worker in retail and working full time would destroy me.
