Going through 8 hours of going to school (work hours), then coming back to do homework (overtime).
Do you think this method is healthy for kids? Or do you think that teachers should be able to fit lessons into school hours so that when kids come home, they and their parents don't have to stress. They could focus on other things like family time, sports, and recreation.

Not every child has a stable home life. Some have to work after school. Some have to take care of themselves and their younger siblings. Some have abusive parents.
On the other hand, some have parents who are well educated or can hire tutors.
I've always thought that in 1-8 grade, they should have 45 minutes of language arts and 45 minutes of math in the morning, then 30 minutes of language arts in the afternoon where they write about what they read and studied in the morning, and they do math work that reinforces what they did in the morning.
The entire school system is terrible but I am not gonna go into a length explenation for my reasoning twice haha. If you want my whole controverial take on the school system this is where to go : Where have all the clever people gone?
I agree with you entirely. I think the school system is ancient and outdated. It needs to destroyed and built from the ground up... same as the government.
The government I wouldn't destroy and build from the ground up, very bad idea thats been tried already. You create a power vacuum and those tend to be filled up by the strongest entity which tends to be a dictator. But it does need the population to rise up and force trough democratic reform so that democracy is functional again.
I believe there is a better system than democracy that can be created. There are enough intelligent and talented individuals with great intentions that could help to develop that system. Just like the school system, the government we have right now in every part of the world is heavily outdated.
Don't you think with the ability we have to communicate online nowadays, there should be a vote for every decision made in a country rather than electing one of the few clowns that wants to represent the country and have them make all the decisions for us?
I believe in both systems, every single vote would get very tiresome. Let them do their thing but have a proper democratic system to overrule them, so that if they don't do what the people want to do we can do referenda to either vote them out or force a policy trough a society / block a change they were trying.
You wouldn't have to vote on every decision just as you don't have to vote for the PM/president in general. But you'd have the choice to vote for the topics you care about. Isn't that already better than what we have now?
Yes, but doing that across the board is dangerous. And keep in mind I am one of the biggest direct democracy advocates on this website. To make the system functional barriers need to be in place so it doesn't get hijacked by a small group of well coordinated voters.
So what you do is have an entry requirement, like collect X signatures to motion a change. And then do the whole system. I'm not sure if it was you I explained it to, but I recently wrote out the entire way i'd design a functioning system in one of the comments.

If school takes 8 hours, then homework shouldn't be obligatory
In German schools, homework is mostly a kind of project with a deadline after the nearest school break. They are mostly group projects, and kids would rather schedule meetings to work on them on weekends than on normal school days. Normal school days afternoons and evenings are for rest and socializing
I don’t like the idea of homework. When I was a teacher, I NEVER gave any assignments that couldn’t be completed during class time. You’re right that 8 hours is a long time already. I don’t see the point of doing art at home also.
Considering that I never did homework basically all the way through elementary and high school. No I don't think it is the best way to learn, I learned enough during the school day. College was different my whole life revolved around school work but I don't think that helped me learn more lol.
Homework is one of the least effective methods to learn or teach something.
Read the huge Metastudy by Hattie, its a few years old but he took thousands of studies regarding school and learning and put them all together and ranked the best for learning and teaching.
As a teacher, most of the time the only way my students have homework is when they don't finish their in class assignments, or if there is an assignment that requires individual research. Quality of instruction and incentivizing students to stay focused makes more of a difference than quantity of work. FYI, using my methods, my students had higher test scores my first year of teaching than the students' of the more experienced teachers. FYI, I teach elementary for now.
If they couldn't learn during school hours and under the tutelage of a trained professional, how the fuck they gonna learn at home under the tutelage of their mom who works at a Deli and their father that only went to school 98 days a year and graduated 255/300 of his class and like 11 kids of his class had died before graduation?
As far as not getting the job done in class, I have taught advanced placement classes and TBH it's almost impossible to cover the curriculum unless the kids are doing SOME outside work. For AP, in my opinion, it wouldn't matter if the teacher was Socrates Plato or Aristotle - it's not getting completely done in class.
That's why teachers get paid so little. How the fuck you think I'm gonna teach them AP anything and for free after I worked all day? Maybe cut out stupid shit like Math and Gym and make the real classes longer.
It's a voluntary class so parents/kids are counseled on what their signing up for. I would never expect parent to do it. It's kids job. by the way I don't get paid little - $141K and $125 hour for tutoring.
School is school & home is home & truthfully the two should be separated so kids have freedom to have fun outside of school as well. As for me I always did my homework on the bus or right before class so I could go out & play instead of hitting the books & wasting my weekend away.
Not for young children. I don't think they should be given homework at all. They should be out playing - and not video games. But as kids get older, I think introducing limited homework, book reports and special assignment is good.
I also don't think young kids should be using computers or the Internet. They have plenty of time for that.
I remember having home work and thinking it was a punishment but I don’t like home work so I’d say no it’s not fair on children they have unbearable 8 hours of school that’s enough
No not a fan of homework. Basically homework is suppose to be practice. But the problem is if you don't already understand it before you left school, then all you're doing is wasting time by doing practice wrong when you get home
Maybe it would if the homework had what was taught, specifically math. It’s kind of regular that the homework and group tests have random bullsh*t slapped onto them. Also for some reason my math teacher loves giving homework on Friday’s while acting like a sarcastic dingle.
Not fun is an understatement. Kids aren't meant to be in jail like that with all the energy they have. They could also be learning things in a much more fun way.
I'm a teacher And I bought into the assigning homework thing for a while. There is no statistical benefit to doing homework. Stop it. Kids need downtime and control over their time. They have agency and feelings too.
