Why would he explain himself to me?

There is this guy I always had a crush on, I tried everything to get his attention but all my attempts were vain. I gave up recently and I decided to ignore him and be as cold as he was with me. So I started talking to this other guy at work, my crush noticed this and he started acting weird. He began whispering things in my ear (not sexual but normal and irrelevant things) in front everyone.

Today I was going to ask him something and some girl was all excited and happy hugging him when I arrived to his office. I just excused myself and said I'd be back some other time, anyway he told me it was ok and he went on explaining that the girl was his employee in the past and that she got accepted at another job and in university because of his recommendation letters... I just don't see why he's acting this way now if he always ignored me in the past. Why explain himself to me?
