How to respond to someone who texts you 'Hey' out of the blue?

Haven't spoke to this friend in two months and out of the blue he texts me 'hey.' What am I supposed to say? I don't know what to answer.

Just say Hi! They probably just want to check in with you or maybe he/she regrets losing contact with you. Just be friendly, do smalltalk & look where it leads to. :)

Just say, Hi how are you?
