Is there a way to comfort my friend?

His long-term friend (a large female Rottweiler) just passed away very shortly after her 13th b-day. He's so heartbroken that he didn't go to work yesterday.

His father gave him that gift to him when he was 10. She was a puppy at the time and since then they were friends. He's still crying.

Tell him to be proud that he gave a dog a very good life, one that it might not have had otherwise. He gave it safety and love. He should hold on to that knowledge. We can't prevent death, it is very much part of life. Instead of focusing on how it ends, focus on how it was lived and be grateful for the memories that you have, that can't be taken away from you.

I will and I believer that's a major reason the dog was able to live 3-5 years longer; it was well fed, cared for and loved. Their usual lifespan is ages 8-10 years old.

Give him as much support as you can, and encourage to adopt a sheltered dog when he feels better.

I was impressed way back in 2018 when she made it pass ages 8-10; their average lifespan. My friend knew she was going to be gone any moment but he made sure to still enjoy those last times.
