Apologies if this seems patronizing but just having a pocket knife doesn't make you safe. Not only do you need to know how to use it, possibly even if knife-wielding hand-to-hand combat, but you also need the mental fortitude to stay calm and focused in those situations.
Also, sometimes by you pulling out a combat knife could make your life MORE in-danger as now you are a serious threat to that person, and they may react with a similarly deadly reaction as to where they otherwise may have not.
Maybe you'll be fine, I'm just saying that just because a you have a knife doesn't mean you're safe.

@sea_09 try to explain the many benefits of hiking, cross country, fresh air, off the beaten path or whatever you can argue, well not necessarily argue but explain the many benefits of this new found interest you have and go from there. I was raised in the country so this was not an issue, but a bro at school is not in the stix and had to practically beg to come to our farm to hang out. It's ok out away from everyone and everything else, no doubt safer and it's very peaceful and relaxing. Maybe invite them to join you, the first trip anyways so they see how nice it is. Then maybe they will be more open to you going
A pocket knife wouldn't stop a determined crack head on drugs, hell I could shoot them and they'd keep on coming, cause they don't care.
A pocket knife won't do any good to a drug dealer that has a gun. If you do get attacked and raped, you'll have life long trauma if you live through it.
If you really want to do it, talk to your parents and ask them to send you to self defense classes, it will help way beyond just the trail walking. Might help them be more comfortable with you doing it, otherwise I'd say never go alone... if possible, get a hold of a stun gun, pepper spray or something useful.
Walks can be so therapeutic and enjoyable. Yellow to clear your mind or address matters in your life proposing challenges I’m going outside of the building is always good. Asva young female, it would be good for you to have some companions with you. Perhaps a couple of friends. Even a furry friend would make things slightly safer.
Putting yourself in danger completely nullifies any benefits of a walk, just keep that in mind. Job is to protect their children as best they can.

You don't. That's stupid dangerous. Never go out alone in areas with freaking crack heads and dealers running around that area.
Bring a friend, you should never hike alone anyways, if you sprain an ankle or hurt yourself in a way that you can't walk anymore it's very dangerous.
I understand where you're coming from, but you should always be with someone when exploring.Yeah, you really shouldn't walk on the trail by yourself. That's where all of the rapists hide to attack their victims.
I know it's not your fault, and it's really sad. But that's just the reality we're living in.That is a stupid dangerous idea and sounds like you are using to get yourself killed. You should bring some friends with you and never go alone, You're not a superhero.
Safety in numbers is always best idea.
take a friend ideally a couple of friends with you.Find a friend to go with you. They're right you should never walk on trails alone.
I was robbed at gun point a pocket knife is not enough
Oh dang
i started driving so I go to a park nearby and run every day
just say you will take a friend but then don’t if u wanna be aloneWhat is your method of protecting yourself? A knife? Consider pepper spray and taking a course in self defense. That might change your parents view.
@Aerissa_Jade Maybe you could help with this one? Or maybe not... lol
I can see why they don't want you to. You have a false sense of confidence in defending yourself.
Ask them to come with you first couple of times to see your route?
listen to your parents
