How should kids WAIT for the SCHOOL BUS when it's RAINING?

The picture shows the classic group of school-age kids waiting for the bus in the rain. They're all wearing rain gear and one or two parents are with them, a few holding umbrellas.

A recent trend is for parents to drive their kids to the bus stop when it rains (some even when it's not raining) so the kids can wait in the nice warm dry car. This results in long lines of cars idling along the side of the road for several minutes, until the bus comes. This, of course, makes it difficult (and unsafe) for other cars on the road to pass them.

What do you think? Is it okay for kids to stand in the rain, or should they be coddled by waiting in the car?

School buses are requiring a bus stop? Outchea, you get picked up from your driveway UNLESS you’re on a dead end street. So for the dead end street people, it wouldve been a bit pointless for the parents to drive them to the end of the street because that means they likely had enough time to just drive the kid to the school. Our bus driver was rude and if you werent standing outside, she’d pass you up. I think the best bet is just taking an umbrella/raincoat. Once you get to the school, you’re gonna get wet getting off the bus anyways and your parent won't be there with their dry car 🤷‍♀️

Only kids in kindergarten and 1st grade get picked up at their driveway. Other kids get picked up at a nearby communal bus stop.

Thats new to me. We do it differently down here in my city. The bus comes to everyones direct door/driveway UNLESS you are in an apartment complex or on a deadend street

When I was a kid we put on the rain coat & went stood out at the bus stop. Kids these days would melt if they had to do this. LOL

Tom, I didn't melt in the rain or snow and I suspect neither did you. One of my kids walks to school -- gasp -- a half mile in the rain and snow. Two others walk to the bus stop and wait there.

Coming from the country that invented rain we solved this problem by building bus shelters.

Well, the car lines would be a bad thing-but the bus comes by close to the children's homes, and if one, 2, or 3 cars line up it's not too bad. The way things are these days with kidnapping, I would always stay with my kid. I would be one of those waiting in the car--but if my kid said they wanted to wait outside like everyone esle--I'd be there too. Let them decide.

No I actually was never sick when I was in school. I always had to fake it to take a day off here and there

@Fudgeinmycreampie I never used an umbrella until I was an adult. If it was raining, I had a yellow raincoat with hood that I wore. My kids had similar, but in different colors.
