Should parents who raise a Flat-Earther be considered failures?

I know a dude my age who is a flat-Earther. His mom is a school principal. His dad teases him about his beliefs. But none of this seems to matter. The young man thinks there is compelling evidence to suggest the Earth is flat. Ultimately, are his parents failures?

His parents did the best they could. It's not their fault.

I agree with this young man. The Earth is flat.

For anyone who does seek truth in this world, that's often the first Trap people fall into. Flat earth. Whether it's round or flat doesn't matter you can't do anything with that information.

Anyway that kid, being capable of thinking outside the box will eventually move onto other, more useful and important subjects. Developing the ability to truly think critically.

Which is miles ahead of those incapable of thinking, miles ahead of those who would mock and ridicule one who questions the world.

His parents are likely better than the ones who raise sheepish followers who don't know how to think.

I wouldn't blame the parents fully as there is a lot of stuff they cannot control. Opinions, ideas and knowledge being some of them. A parents main goal is to provide the basics and the secondary goal is to prepare them for life. The second goal becomes much harder with outside influences such as peers and the internet. Unless the parents play a direct role in shaping that mind set its not fair to blame them for how their child is choosing to live

Unless the child can show some multi-dimensional space where it could be true, then yes. Of course, if he or she could actually develop a plausible theory, then I would still consider them failures for not pushing that level of genius into a productive endeavor.

@msc545 Obviously the parents were one of these liberal "do your own thing" parents. The kid had no structure in his life. He probably was put in daycare and never had much attention. The first time some crackpot comes up with an idea like the earth id flat or here are 72 genders they are so lost that they will latch on to anything.

The flat earth idea is very old and originated with religious fanatics - not liberals- and I say this as a liberal. We are the intellectuals of this society.

That said - please tell me how beating the child more would have helped.

@msc545 I never said beating. There are other ways to discipline a kid. Back in the day there were lots of kids that were lost that ended up joining the Hari Krishnas or other cults. Most came from affluent families and they did not get much attention at home.

The dad loves Trump and the mom only votes for candidates who are against abortion but she claims she didn't vote for Trump. But she never votes for liberals. So your theory was busted. And any daycare he was in as a child was at their Christian conservative church. His grandparents (pastor and wife) run it.

@exitseven Not adopted. He is the oldest of three. His brother and sister are round-Earthers and do well in school. When it comes to kids, sometimes you get a clunker? Also, the flat-Earther was ready to join in the Jan 6th riots at the Capitol until his mom talked him out of it. I'm not kidding. So that flat-Earther is kinda like a younger version of you. :)

Why does adoption even matter in this case? Why can't he just be their biological child? You are familiar with Occam's Razor?

@msc545 I see Occams Razor up close just about every day. Sometimes kids are adopted when they are older and they are already messed up. I knew a guy whose wife wanted to adopt a kid that was a real hard luck case. The girl was 12 years old. A few months later she set the garage on fire and almost burned down the house.

As an adopted person myself, I can tell you for a fact that adoption is not benign by any means.

No, she was from Ireland and my friend and his wife are of Irish decent and are really into the culture so the wife decides she wants to adopt this kid. The next thing I heard was the garage went up in flames with his truck inside it

@supercutebutt It is a really sad story. They kept this kid and tried to straighten her out but finally she had to go. Then this guys wife fell down the stairs and died a few months later. My friend moved out of the house and moved in with his brother. I think last summer was the last time i saw him.
