Is a childs name that important?

A court in New Zealand took a couple's child from them because of the name they gave her. She was named Talula Does The Hula From Hawaii, and the court ruled that it caused the child mental anguish.

Here is the story...

My Chinese wife said I could name our son anything I wanted but it had to be short so she and her family could say it. Well he was born and at the time he was called baby (last name). Well I got a paper and pencil and asked for something to write on. Well my mother wanted to name him Marty because my dad’s nickname was that. people knew him by that instead of his real name. I ran it by my wife and she said no - sounds too close to farty. It hit me then whatever name I chose he could be teased later in life. I asked her what about if we named him after me? She said I don’t want to call for you and both of you answer. I said good point. So I ran down some names and I had thought of Zach or Zack. She didn’t like it. So it came down to the last one. Max. And weirdly enough I took the paper off and the object I was using to write on was a baby Name book! I looked up the final name of my choice and I found out that it means - The Greatest. Ever since watching one of my favorite movies - Flight of the Navigator - specifically where the kid says “So what do I call you anyway?” The talking robot thing said “I am a Tri-Maxion drone ship”. The kid said “Tri-Maxion?” The robot thing said “Affirmative”. The kid said “ ok I’ll call you Max, it’s easier”. The robot thing said “Max?” And the kid said “Right”. So that is how my son Max got his name. My wife loved it because it’s easy and short. My mother wasn’t thrilled at all. Her response was “Why did you name him after a dog?” And to really show good faith, face, intentions, whatever you call it, I made his middle name her last name. She and her family loved it but my mother hated it.

However a few months later I realized that I had just dropped our son into the mother of potential teases. I know someone sometime is going to call him maxi - pad. I really hope I’m wrong. He’s 11 years old now and sooner or later with everyone getting teenager, that tease will probably happen. I sure hope I’m wrong though. 😞

    There are limits on names.

In Australia (next door to NZ) it is a max of 38 letters including spaces for both last name and given names. I am all in favor of this being in the IT industry because we need to know what the max number of characters a name can be.

Talula Does The Hula From Hawaii sneaks in at 32 characters. So that is OK.

Sadly some parents want to make jokes of their child and I think it was a good judgement and the child deserved a new home.

I knew a German family living in the US, wanted to name their daughter Brooklyn. However, when they went to register her birth certificate in Germany, it was denied... Germany does not allow a person to be named after a place.

Funny. A little fastidious I think but that is German. What did they do? I am wondering if Brooklin would have been stamped APPROVED.

Seems all countries have a list of banned baby names. Australia doesn't allow trade names - so Ikea is sadly out - or names that are likely to cause a child to be ridiculed. Just as well, as parents have tried to register D*ckhead and Scrotum.

Bad pregnancies I guess or maybe the mother thought that was the fathers name.

Absolutely. I once taught in an elementary school. The teacher next door, believe this or not, had a child named Chablis, and another named Gonnerea. I’m not sure that was the spelling, but the teacher told me she asked the parent if she knew that was the name of a sexually trans disease. She didn’t. Wow.

Believe it or not, I can top that- in awfulness, if not in length. At a New Year's party in my high school days, some friends and I were reading a book of baby names (yes, I AM Mister Excitement), and we came upon a story in it of a woman who named her three sons "Christmas", "Demon", and "Mom".

I don't care what your sexual politics are; naming a baby "Mom" is child abuse. Imagine going to the store, or to kindergarten, and always thinking everyone is calling you, or talking about you. Geh.

Yes, because a name gives meaning, purpose, and mission. In a way, it sets the tone for how a child will live. It ought to honor someone or something. Plus, it's the name that they'll have for life. It'll appear on legal documents and personal records. It's how they will be identified. Think it through before you decide to be cute and creative.

Yes. Toon many poor folk, in a conscious or subconscious wish to keep their children from success, give their kinds goofy names, i. e., white mostly Southerners with Jim Bob, Bobbie Sue, Billy Joe, Fancy (actually a cute name and a Bobbie Gentry/R

EXACTLY what poor black folk do to their children with the idiotic names with which they saddle them. (Bobbie Gentry, born Roberta Lee Streeter July 27,1941, was one of my favourite boyhood singers. Not too many black Canadian lads were fans of white Southern girl singers in the 60's.)

Of course it is important, otherwise the child might recieve a name which will attract certain judgmental bullies. Why run the risk over such small things and not do the proper thing?

A man goes in to a clinic for a colonoscopy. The staff get him prepped and ready for the procedure. The doctor comes in, the man is on his side, and the doctor walks around to the guy’s backside. He looks down and then says, “Sir, do you know you have a piece of lettuce hanging out of your butt?”

The guy responds, “Yeah, and that’s just the tip of the iceberg!”

LOTS of mostly poor blacks give their kids positively stupid,"African-sounding" ( often misspelled names) which result in their resumes' being ignored by many companies. (As are those of the good ol' boy- and girl-sounding names.)

But you can be as racist, homphobic, xenophbic and misogynistic as all get out in Poland, thanks to their crypto-Fascist leader. (Oh well, lots of Polish ladies are hot, even if most Polish lads are schlubs.)

I'm from Poland and it's partly true:
      - you can't name a child after a "common" thing: so names of some objects (like names of furniture from IKEA), mushrooms, animals, palnts etc (some flower names for girls are exceptions, because they already normalised)
      - you can't name a child after something geographical (like the name of the river, mountain, city etc)
      - you can't give a child a diminutive, instead of a full name (like "Katie" instead of "Katherine")
      - you can't give your child an unisex name - the name has to point out gender
      - you can't give your child more than 2 names
      - you can't give your child a name that would be offensive or laughable

In 2015 the law was changed to be made restrictive. It allowed to give foreign versions of polish names to children. It also allowed to give some names that do not point out gender, as long as it's culturally associated with one gender (for example the name Abigail for a girl)

The child would be mocked and harassed because of that name, and if the parents refused to change it, the Court did the right thing.
