If friend A told you months in advance about a special event they want you to attend (without a specified date yet) and you told them you will attend when you receive the date; for friend B to ask you recently if you’re free next weekend for dinner and you are technically free for now so you say yes… for friend A to say the event is now next weekend (the same day as the dinner with friend B), would you go with friend A or friend B? I feel like I have to be with friend A since I promised months prior I will be there but I feel bad for flaking on friend B… what would you choose?

Friend A 100%. It's not flaking because you had a prior commitment. You can always schedule another date. Even for the very next day. Or hell, even after the event. There's nothing stopping you from having your date literally at ANY time you want to. this special event however is a one time thing that you will not be able to go back to. Standing up your friend that you had a prior commitment to, especially one that cannot be undone would be a truly awful thing to do to someone.
Friend A all the way. Honor your commitments and then have your date at any time.
100% agree! Thank you for this great advice!
Friend A as it’s a special event. Then follow up with friend B suggesting a different day for dinner.
Great advice! Thank you
You are welcome. If you are able to invite friend B to the event even better :)
Friend A without a doubt
