Miss Korea 2018 Kim Soo Min was trolled for being "too fat to represent Korea", which hurt her and her parents

Kim Soo Min is the winner of the Miss Korea Pageant 2018.

The 24-year-old winner, who is a graduate from Dickinson College in Pennsylvania, received a tremendous amount of backlash and online hate from a legion of trolls after taking home the crown.

In a country where any woman over 50 kg (110 lbs), regardless of height, is considered "fat", many of the trolls lambasted her for being fat and overweight. The trolls were of the opinion that Soo Min was "too fat to represent Korea". Other insults were that she was "too plain" and thus "not qualified to be Miss Korea".

Weighing at 58 kg (130 lbs), the 174-cm (5'8") beauty queen revealed in an interview (by Asian Boss) that she and her parents had been hurt by all the negative comments.

I know I'm not ugly.. and fat.. but when you constantly hear those things, you lose your confidence and you don't want to be social anymore. And you always have this pressure of having to look perfect.

When asked how her parents felt about her win and the trollish negative comments that followed, Soo Min cried and said that she felt really bad for her parents.

She said that she felt sorry that her parents had to read all the negative comments and go through the pain.

However, Soo Min then went on to state the she would use her title to redefine what it means to be beautiful.

It really made me think that I should use my platform as Miss Korea to redefine what it means to be beautiful and add more diversity to our beauty standards.

I also wish that all the young girls who are watching me on stage or TV would be confident in their bodies, and accept the way they look and maybe, encourage them to participate in the next pageant.

Incidentally...50kg isn’t freakishly thin when you are around 5 feet. To 5 ft 5.

It’s normal slim.

Anyhow in my opinion there’s no good way to do these contests bc they are based on celebrating the most superficial short lived part of a person. I don’t think it matters if she was trolled or not there’s no way this gives anyone confidence. It’s not like she had much to do with her looks. Nor firs anyone else. What if she was fat or ugly... Many people are and they most love with that. She soothes herself by saying she knows she’s not those things so I guess it’s ok to troll all the people who are.

I think it’s all sick. And not bc of thinness. Asians are much healthier than westerners. It’s better on your joints and organs to be thin. And weight Doesn’t mean anything without height and muscle mass and bone density taken into consideration. There’s no such thing as a bad weight in itself.

My favorite for was Korean.. he had the best health regimen and never bothered snoot my weight bc he knew I was strung and healthh and without that stress, I got into the best Shape of my life and trained for a marathon.

While Western drs were all freaking out over my weight I was running marathons.

Being thin is good. Starving is not good. They are not the same. Obesity is not good. It’s a very poor reference point.

It's not that easy to redefine beauty standards. East Asian beauty standards can be very restrictive, several times more so than "Western beauty standards". Many women who are considered average in the US, for example, would be considered fat in South Korea and other East Asian countries. It would take quite a lot of work, and maybe several generations to change an entrenched mentality, such as the one on display here. Not impossible, but in the short-term, fairly improbable.

Media push women and men (yes they use make up too) to lose their identity and be replicas of each other in order to be accepted by the norms socioeconomical status falsely dictates... I would advise this girl to go live to some other country where she will be accepted as she is because at Korea to be accepted you have to be sick and ubnormal.

I hate the way Koreans think, its stupid, all most of them study is sizes, they're so annoying! So I can see the point of the trolls, if you start awarding some pretty average looking women, then the whole thing kind of loses its point.
