Why do girls stare at you from afar but then ignore you when you approach them?

Just wondering why some girls do this. Why would a girl stare at you a lot from afar but when you aproach her she acts uninterested and gives you the cold shoulder?

she finds you attractive but doesn't want a relationship with you

she likes you but is shy

the staring means nothing and she isn't interested

I stare at guys who i really like and also guys that i find creepy / weird. I stare at the weird, creepy guys, to see if they're staring at me still, but i dont make it obvious, because i dont want them thinking i fancy them and if they catch me staring at them, i give them a dirty look, so that they know i dont like it!!
Whilst, if its a guy i find attractive, I'll still steal glances at him, without being too obvious, but if he catches me, I'll smile at him and he'll probably hear rumours that i fancy him, lol 😂 I'll also stare at his crotch area sometimes and give him hugs / get physically close to him, whilst only being friendly, not flirty, until he shows interest back (out of fear of rejection).

Well, if they start a conversation with me and the first words they say is "you have a nice bum *whilst staring at it*" or any other sexual comments or constantly staring at my ass, when theyre old enough to be my dad. Gross. It makes them seem like predators.

There is a possibility that she is shy, but thats not the only thing that could be going on. Sometimes girls just go off in their own mind. I've found myself doing this sometimes. And you catch yourself gazing in a certain directed. And when you come out of it, you realize that your staring at someone. And that they caught you staring. But it didn't really mean anything. It can cause confusion.

I can't really pick any particular thing you put in the poll, but I have noticed what you're saying and to me it seems more like a game thing for them: they find you attractive, sexy even, but have that typical ego where she doesn't want to show you when you do approach her. Women in general tend to think they're above letting a guy know he's attractive to her.

Either shy or what I like to call the "40 yard fake out" which is when you look better at a distance than up close. Most likely shy though.
