I think a dead giveaway is when people hug from the hips and stomach instead of the head and shoulders. Also, when there's caressing involved and generally when you're like pushing the girl onto you so as to have the most surface areas of your bodies in contact as possible.
Also when the arms and hands cross more intimate lines. Like instead of going around the arms and shoulders, the arms go below the shoulders, around the hips, etc.

I find it a guy huge you in a romantic way, his arms will be closer to your neck and if it’s a friendship hug, the hug is closer to your chest or belly.
