Always a risk flirting with a customer. I would say the best way to proceed is with a joke. Next time you see him in the store, smile warmly and with a genuine smile and say to him "I'm starting to think your coming in just to see me!".

If he's into you, and shy like you say, its probable he'll blush or something and then you can say "honestly, I'd be glad if that where true!" keep smiling.

If he's "just a customer" or never considered it, he will likely go for either, laughing and saying "right!" or going right to. "No!" at which point you can say, "don't worry I'm just teasing you". Though you've got a good read on it then.
