I've never seen a hotdog machine in the UK. My only knowledge of them comes from Apu's kwick e Mart in the Simpsons.
So are these things real or just something you see on TV and if so how common are they?

Yeah, but that’s the old still. They use roller grills now and they cook more than just hot dogs. They have weiner shaped burgers, no joke. They have proper sausages and “tornadoes” or “taquitos”. The latter have various names based on the region of the country you’re in.
They are quite popular at road shops where the next fast food chain might be miles away. I believe it was the popularity of those machines and similar hot convenience foods setups that compelled the gas station/road shop/fast food chain amalgamation that is so popular pretty much everywhere in the US now.
The only thing Americans hate more than getting out of our recliners is getting out of our cars once we’ve gotten out of our recliners. So “one stop shopping” is all the rage, in every conceivable format. We can buy the same sh*tty fast food that’s killing us in the exact same stores where we get the prescriptions meant to prolong our ailing condition. Also not a joke. I walk right by a Pizza Hut in the Target store to get to the CVS counter to pick up my prescriptions. I haven’t been to a pharmacy that sells only drugs and healthcare products in over thirty years.
Sure, most convenience stores in gas stations have hot dog machines for serve yourself.
Lots of them have rollers that are warm and constantly rotate the hot dogs.
Buns are in a warmer. Usually the condiments are in packets.
I doubt they are used because it could lead to over cooked hot dogs and under cooked hot dogs. I know some shawarma places have rotating full day meat grills that get sliced only when orders come in, but its not enclosed in a container, is a different type of meat, and much longer than a hot dog grill.
Nearest we've to that in the UK are kebab shops where stacked meat turns on a vertical spit and sliced as required. I won't touch them because it's mostly made with very old ewes with mastitis.
In America, at convenience stores, those ridiculous machines exist. Sometimes they might be at old school diners.
I suppose it makes the hot dogs look like they've been or are being grilled. But MY assumption is they've been in those machines FOREVER.
Yes, hotdog machines are real, and they're quite common in various places, especially in the US. They often appear in convenience stores, gas stations, or fast food joints. These machines, known as hotdog rollers, are designed to grill hotdogs continuously, ensuring they stay warm and evenly cooked. While you might have seen them on shows like *The Simpsons*, they're definitely not just fiction! They might not be as widespread in the UK, but they surely exist and are a practical option for serving hotdogs efficiently. 🌭

I know this type "hotdog bun impaler"
They are. You'll see them in lots of gas stations and convenience stores, They generally have the heat lamp on the little guys as they spin on rollers, there may also be taquitos, more substantial types of sausage, and a unit next to that with burgers etc. Perhaps they will sell fried chicken, certainly pizza that's been languishing under the inverted red flood light lookin' doo dad. I'll take a pass on that stuff though as well as any frank'n'furter that is resurrected from a vat of opaque water... I'll go to Slovacek's or some other nice Czech sausage maker if I want the good stuff

They exist, yes, but you'll mostly only see them in some of the sketchier gas stations or truck stops, just like the Kwik E Mart.
Even then, most people won't buy a hot dog from one; they're kind of a joke or a cliché at this point. They're mostly out dated, and disappearing, but you can occasionally find someone who will buy one of the hot dogs as a quick, cheap meal.
Street vendors don't use them, either. Like the UK, if you visit a vendor, they will usually pull out a fresh hot dog from a tray in hot water.
Of course they are, even the Welsh have them, they’re not that new. (I’m poking fun at Poppy’s absurd questions)
Don’t they have one in your local cinema confectionery counter? Normally quite common there.
I've never seen one. My cinema sells bottles of wine but I can't ever recall seeing a hotdog
Ooh, very upmarket area you’re in Poppy, lol. No nachos either?
Merlot? Sauvignon Blanc? Does it matter on the film? What’s your poison at the movies?
Yes they are very much real when I was a kid. We had a hotdog machine, and we sold Snow cone popcorn, and hotdogs at our family campground on the side, and the camper brought the hotdogs and the rest of it, We had a small store at the check-in office
I'm an Audio/Video Integrator, and my main equipment supplier has one of these machines in the warehouse, so that customers (i. e., guys like me) can get a free hot dog and a soda when we come to pick up gear. I don't actually go there very often because it's usually easier to have things shipped to me, but I go 5 or 6 times a year, and I usually get a hot dog.
Most convenience stores have these machines and have for 30 years.
Yeah they're real. And pretty common in the US. They fit our shitty diet ethos perfectly. Full disclosure... I have a weakness for hot dogs but, only in summer.
Side note: Boston has a thing called Beans n Franks (Frankfurters). Open a can of baked beans and slice up some hot dogs and toss em in with the beans. Heat the whole gourmet mix until steaming hot and dish it up. Utterly unhealthy unholy mix but damn me, I like it. Part of my childhood.
In the US, hot dog machines are very real. You can usually find them in the mini-stores at gas stations and service areas on the highway. They are self-serve, as are drinks at the drinks machine.
They don’t actually make the hot dogs, that’s done at the factory and they are usually precooked so the venders you see just heat them up with the machine with rollers or they boil them at a hot dog truck, lots of convenience stores have them like 711 and Circle K in the United States not sure what they’re called in the UK or gas stations often have them too if they sell food
I don't know about there being a distinction between hotdog and sausage machines apart from both are using the worst ingredients to feed people.
Sure, in the US they're in all the good gas stations. If you're lucky they leave them on the machine "too long" and they get kind of chewy and dried up with a wrinkly texture. Those are the best ones but very rare to find them.
Yes indeed they are real, There is a gas station in my town that has one. It is next to the Slurpee machine.
Hot dogs are just another American abomination that so many love to eat. As an American myself, I just dont get it. I often think most Americans were born without any sense of taste.
They are real...
I have one, and an old fashioned popcorn machine, and a cotton candy machine also. They were handed down from my dad. We used them at our parish festivals every year.
I worked at a store with a women who cooked hotdogs on a hotdog roller 3 days out of the week. The whole building smelled like hotdogs those days. I couldn't even eat her food, bc I been vegan.
Yes. Many gas stations/convenience stores have them in the US
You wouldn't see them in food trucks or stalls here you mainly see them in convivence stores and gas stations.
Well hot dogs barely qualify as real so the. question is valid
Yes, but only at places like Apu's, ie 7-11's and such. I don't think I've ever seen anyone actually buy one.
They are real and are in every single gas station in America. If you eat a hotdog that came out of boiling water you should be lined up against the wall and shot for being a commie
Pretty much every gas station in the US has a hot dog machine.
Weenie rollers are a real thing State Side. Every 7-11 probably has one.
Yes they are real. But most of them are the type you find at a 7 eleven, where they roll and grill/warm up evenly.
They are very real
Common this side of the pond
They look real, I'm not sure.
Sadly, yes
