Do women lack empathy?

Was watching this video the other day, and realized that it's at least possible that part of why women are not funny at all is their lack of empathy. Seems like most girls are oblivious to what really goes on around them so their words and actions are purely based on emotions and instinct. The dating game seems to back this up too, as women will cheat and/or seek a divorce with the full knowledge of the lasting effects on their children, and across history women, much more often than men, have been capable of heartlessly killing or leaving babies behind.

I could be wrong, but it seems that way judging by the way male problems and complaint in life when talked about it to women are recieved with nothing but shaming language, ridicule, and bullying. Inb4 mysoginist.

This is total bullshit, and is actually sexist as well. Women are probably more empathetic than men. That's why we cry at sad movies. I actually get an ache in my chest when I see people suffering. And, I'm actually pretty funny. A lot of people tell me so with no prompting, and dozens of people have told me I could be a comedian. This makes me furious. I don't think your conclusions makes much sense. Empathy is the ability to feel the way another person feels (to be in their shoes which requires a higher level of emotionally fueled thinking) so if you claim that most girls base their actions off emotions and instinct, wouldn't that make girls more likely to be empathetic?

~ Nope not necessarily. As when a woman reads something posted by a male if she disagrees with it because it goes against her reality, will not try to empathize and look at it from perspective and have an open mind about it.

The typical reaction I've seen from females on this site is to counter-attack this view with an emotional outburst that goes along lines of shamming, being cynical, insulting negative character traits to the person that said it. They rarely empathize with the persons condition.

Meanwhile I see guys on this site taking things neutrally, and empathizing with female complaint all the time. Very rarely would you see this from women.

Well I agree with you to an extent, I just had a girl block me after I made a sarcastic remark regarding her opinion lol
on the other side of things, I see guys here who refuse to see things from other people's perspectives and basically tried to "prove" their opinions were factually correct when they were nothing more than opinions. There are 3 kinds of empathy. Cognitive, compassionate and emotional one.

Cognitive Empathy is basically being able to put yourself into someone else’s place, and see their perspective.

Compassionate Empathy is when you quite literally feel the other person’s emotions alongside them, as if you had ‘caught’ the emotions.

Emotional Empathy is what we usually understand by empathy: feeling someone’s pain, and taking action to help.

Or to explain it in more detail. Cognitive Empathy is an analytical approach to empathy that requires a good social and emotional competence. The other two are rather either picking up on emotional reactions and/or syncing with it. But they don't necessarily understand the situation when they just pick up on it.

And that's what is a key factor for humour. Humour requires social competence on many levels as well as understanding and analyisng the situation - the situation of your audience as well as the situation of whatever humorous thing you are saying. That's also why many women say they find humour attractive - it implies social competence AND cognitive empathy - or what they describe as a "sensitive man" while meaning they want a man who understands them and preferably mind-reads.

Another example of that difference would be the questions I have seen around here asking about if people think that boys are disadvantages by schools and the schoolsystem and as a general gist you can say that most girls say no while most guys say yes. Naturally this could simply be a factor of selectivity, but personally there is way more to it. The problem is the girls don't see that disadvantage, because they don't apply cognitive empathy to the situation. So as a result they don't see nor emphatise boys being distressed so the conclusion is that there is no problem. What they fail to understand though is that distress and dissatisfaction for boys is expresses very differently and thus they just dont pick up on it (thus lack of social competence and cognitive empathy). Boys isolate themselves are retaliate with aggressions.

Another very example is pretty much a freudian slip. Just pay attention to how often girls use the phrase "What do you feel about?". Ever heard a guy using that? Barely ever. Almost all guys use "What do you think about?" while plenty of girls rather choose "feel" as the word of choice.

That being said, guys really are clueless about how girls function as well. They have good cognitive empathy when it comes down to other guys as well as scenarios, but the very difference between the sexes overwhelms them as well.

Anoter important thing is that none is particulary better. The skills of both sides should be aquired and thus instead of fighting each other both should attempt to complement and learn from each other while embracing their own strengths.
